2024 Track Fest: Sifan Hassan, Loaded Men’s Steeple and Women’s 10,000 Highlight Saturday Night’s Meet

The Olympic and US Trials standards will be on the minds of many runners in LA on Saturday night

On Saturday night, Sound Running is putting on the Track Fest in LA at Occidental College’s Jack Kemp Stadium. It’s a World Athletics bronze track event and will feature music, food, and fast racing. If you live in California, I hope you consider supporting the event and attend in person. If you don’t live in Southern California, you can watch it by paying a very reasonable $6.99. *Ticket and PPV Info *Meet Website

There are some really interesting races including a stacked men’s steeple with Evan Jager, Duncan Hamilton, Anthony Rotich, and even Emmanuel Bor and a women’s 10,000 with Elly Henes, Keira D’Amato, Emily Infeld, and others. I briefly preview them in the order they occur and give you the full fields as well.

All times are US Pacific so add three hours for US ET.

Elise Cranny was entered in this one but no longer is on the start list.

9:05 p.m. – Men’s 5000m: Grijalva looks to finds his form

By his lofty standards (4th at Worlds each of the last two years), Luis Grijalva hasn’t been on top of his game so far this year as he was well off the standard at The TEN (where he ran 27:22) and last week he only ran 3:41 in the 1500 (his pb is 3:35.32). What can he do here?

9:20 p.m. – Maurten Women’s 10,000m: D’Amato, Henes & Infeld go for the standard

With Alicia Monson out with injury and Fiona O’Keeffe in the marathon, the US has only two people eligible to go to the Olympics in the 10,000. Weini Kelati picked up the standard at The TEN and Katie Izzo has played the cross country game correctly and has been given the standard via her XC ranking.

A number of US women will try to pick up the standard of 30:40 here to make the Olympic Trials race worth watching, including former marathon American record holder Keira D’Amato, former Worlds 10,000 medallist Emily Infeld, and former NCAA XC champ Ednah Kurgat.

Henes after winning the 2021 NCAA 5000.

2021 NCAA 5000 champ Elly Henes is also in this one and it’s possible she could get in via world ranking even if she doen’t quite hit the standard depending on how many bonus points she picks up. She’s currently the first person out on the Road To Paris rankings list (and may be high enough to get in if not all of the XC spots are used). The US Olympic Marathon Trials surprise 4th placer Jessica McClain also is entered here.

Friendly reminder, the US Trials A standard is 31:30.00 and the Olympic standard is 30:40.00.

9:55 p.m. – Maurten Men’s 10,000m

Friendly reminder, the US Trials A standard is 27:45.00 and the Olympic standard is 27:00.00. Looking at these guys’ PBs, 27:00 is a bit unlikely, but I’ve been defending Stanford’s Cole Sprout’s right to dream big all week on the messageboard.
