Press Release
March 2, 2017
The 34th New Balance Nationals Indoor, set for Friday–Sunday, March 10-12, at the New Balance Track & Field Center at The Armory in Washington Heights, promises to be another three-day extravaganza featuring the best high school athletes in America chasing victories, All-American honors and national records.
Last year’s NBNI featured 3,650 boys and girls from 43 states and four Canadian provinces, setting 11 national high school records and 35 meet records (including non-Championship divisions). Similar entry numbers are expected this year. There are 23 Championship events for each gender, as well as 17 “Emerging Elite” and three Freshman events contested over the weekend, with the top 6 in the Championship division earning All-American honors.
The Championship fields already include nine athletes who have set national records this winter, including New Yorkers Sammy Watson and Lauren Harris, New Jersey’s Olympian Sydney McLaughlin and Alyssa Wilson, Californian Tara Davis. Team USA Paralympian Hunter Woodhall from Utah, winner of two medals last summer in Rio, is also entered.
The action starts at 9 a.m. March 10, 8:30 a.m. March 11 and 9 a.m. March 12. Sunday’s final session – the most action-packed 2-1/2 hours of the season – begins with a special Opening Ceremonies at 12:45 p.m., followed by the last 10 boys’ finals and 11 girls’ finals.
