2013 Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational: Men’s Results and Flash Recap
by LetsRun.com
April 29, 2013
The 2013 Payton Jordan Invitational was Sunday night (Monday morning ET) in Palo Alto. Since the meet is really all about a chase for times, below we give you the results for the top heat of each the men’s distance events as well as a brief comment or two if the race was significant.
The times next to the event are the 2013 Moscow World Championship ‘A’ and ‘B’ standards. It’s important to remember that unlike in the Olympics, you can go to the Moscow World Champs with a ‘B’ qualifier (two ‘As’ and one ‘B’ can go).
We start with the men’s 5000 as that was the most hyped event and then give you the events with the most qualifiers next.

The fine season for World Cross Country sixth placer Ben True continued as he got the narrow win and ‘A’ qualifier over Evan Jager 13:14.44 to 13:14.60 as the top seven all got at least a ‘B’ qualifier. Both True and Jager PR’d in the process as their previous pbs were 13:20.53 and 13:22.18 respectively.
However, the guy having the biggest breakthrough in the US in 2013 isn’t True. It’s Eric Jenkins. The junior from New Hampshire, who took his 3000 PR from 8:37 to 7:50 indoors (and 7:46.21 ignoring a DQ), took his pb from 14:04 to 13:18 on Sunday in Palo Alto. Wow!!!
Quick Take #1: Jenkins is now the ninth tenth fastest collegian and fourth (or fifth see below) fastest American collegian in history according to Track and Field News.
Correction: Diego Estrada is so good we forgot he’s still in college. Diego is running for NAU this spring. Estrada is a US and Mexican citizen but runs for Mexico internationally. So Estrada’s run makes him the fastest time by an American collegian, but not the fastest time by an American who can represent the US internationally.
Ten Fastest Collegians in History at 5000
(Bold = American)
13:08.28i Lawi Lalang’ (Arizona) 02/11/12
13:08.4 Henry Rono’ (Washington St) 04/08/78
13:13.74i Stephen Sambu’ (Arizona) 02/11/02

13:16.98 Alistair Cragg’ (Arkansas) 04/30/04
13:18.12i Galen Rupp (Oregon) 02/13/09
13:18.46 Brent Vaughn (Colorado) 05/04/08
13:18.47 Cam Levins’ (Southern Utah) 04/20/12
13:18.58 Eric Jenkins (Northeastern) 4/28/2013
13:19.22 Rudy Chapa (Oregon) 04/07/79
*US Citizen but runs for Mexico internationally.
Note: Track and Filed News collegiate lists do not count marks after the NCAA meet of an athlete’s senior year. Stanford list Ian Dobson (13:15.33) and Ryan Hall (13:16.03) on its 5k lists, but those marks were ran after NCAAs.
Quick Take #2: Not that they are likely to go for the US or Kenya in the 5000, but it sucks that Garrett Heath and Sam Chelanga missed it by .01 and .07 respectively.
Quick Take #3: The ultimate big story from this heat may be the fact that the comeback of former 26:59 man Chris Solinsky is coming along very well. His 13:23 is a big step up from the 8:05 3000 he ran indoors.
Quick Take #4: We know Alan Webb improved a lot in a short period last year but it’s painful to see him third to last in a race.
Quick Take #5: Added Monday am: Alan Webb fading to 13:37 in his first race of the year isn’t a disaster. Not sure why he wouldn’t do some sort of rust buster before this. How many other guys were in their first race of the year? Nonetheless, to be really relevant now as a US guy on the international stage, you need to be a 13:00 guy. That’s a long way from 13:37.

Quick Take #1: Can someone tell us why the IAAF lowered the ‘A” standard from 27:45 for Londo to 27:40? Seems stupid to us.
Quick Take #2: As fans, we were hoping to see 2013 World Cross Country heroes Bobby Mack and Ryan Vail get the ‘A’. Vail got the ‘B’ which he already had. Mack has the ‘B’ from last year as well.
