Shoe stores always say to leave a thumb width of space from your longest toe to the end of your shoe. Why do you need so much space? I don't mind that much space for a daily trainer type shoe, but for a fast shoe or a race shoe I try and size it as close as I can without actually touching. Although my spikes are super tight and in general the faster the workout/run the tighter I like my shoes.
My question is: why do "they" say this space is necessary? A bigger shoe just weighs more, which can't be good for a race, and if your shoes are laced right your foot should not be sliding around. But, I have not raced a marathon yet, so I'm wondering if maybe in a marathon peoples feet swell that much and they need a bigger shoe?
Just interested as I've raced a half marathon with somewhat tight shoes with no issues, and if we ever get to run marathons again I don't want to lose a toenail from swollen feet or whatever happens.
