I really am interested in how he will do at the trials. Does anyone know how fully invested he is towards it? It seems like he is going for it as his main focus for now, but I may be wrong.

I have a hard time believing the trials are his main goal if he's doing this much technical trail running. That's not a knock on him or his training, it's just the reality of road racing at the highest level. Who's going to be more prepared for a fast marathon? The guy doing 20 on the roads with 10 at marathon pace, or the guy running 8:50 miles up and down a 13% grade rocky slant?
I think he's hedging his bets. This type of training will allow him to maintain the fitness he needs for a strong showing at the trials, but ultimately it won't detract from his bread and butter, which is the ultra distances.
