One of the all-time greats has passed:
One of the all-time greats has passed:
Peter Snell and Roxette in the same week.
He always comes up in greatest of all time discussions.
Sad to hear it. A legend of the sport.
Very sad news. Possibly the greatest ever combined middle distance runner ever, and certainly his legacy is unique for doing the 800 and 1500m double in '64.
Condolences to his family, friends and all who knew him.
R.I.P to the Great Peter Snell.
No way, say it ain't so. RIP.
Sadly it is. This is not completely surprising. He had heart troubles for about nine years. Maybe two months ago, something like that, he had a "cardiac event" and passed out while driving. He said he'd forgotten to take his pills that morning and was lucky he didn't kill anyone. He was scheduled to to Monaco for some sort of celebration but decided at the last minute not to go because if he had "an event" on the plane there'd be nothing anyone could do. He went in the same month Lydiard did and in a fairly similar way. Arthur was on a couch watching a basketball game when he dozed off and didn't wake up. Peter and his wife were going to go shopping. He sat down shortly before they were to leave and like Lydiard, dozed off and stayed that way. RIP
Of the "big" names from that group, Halberg and Magee are all that are left.
I exchanged emails with him two weeks ago.
Sad.
RIP.
One of the all-time greats. His 1:44 on non-rubber track was worth 1:42 according to Lydiard.
He was back-to-back Olympic champion and world record holder in the late 50s, early 60s.
He, and John Hadd both independently discovered that after you deplete glycogen stores on a long, done at at least 7-min/mile you activate the fast twitch.....
Apparently excellent cricketer and table tennis player.
A great runner; a decent yet distinguished human being.
Sad day in athletics.
'No Buggles, No Drums' is a great read on Peter Snell and I recommend it to all those that aspire to greatness.
RIP mr Snell! I salute you! One of the GREAT in running history. I have read one of his favorite workouts was 20 x 400m .....
- In eternity we are all equal -
Terrible news. He will be greatly missed.

+1
One of the greatest. Self-effacing, Class guy.
His book "No Bugles, No Drums" is one of the best books on running, inspired me.
Long out of print now.
Very sad to hear this. He was a great runner & great human being.
Lydiard's greatest disciple. RIP to a true legend and pioneer.
Sad, I remember reading a book on great Olympians about him in 3rd Grade around 1972, He still hold the New Zealand Record he set when he ran the World Record at the time 1:44.3
Requiescat en Pace - the GREATEST ever .
Never met you - but miss you already .
His death saddens me like Bannisters did. True gentlemen and sportsmen. Nothing phony about them. They actually had lives outside of the track. RIP.
Such a sad day. Ran with such power. Had regal form. Icon.
RIP Sir Peter.
Also an incredible all-around athlete. He finished 3rd in the Made-For-TV "Superstars" Competition at age 38 in 1977.

He discusses it in his post-running autobiography, From Olympian to Scientist.
