took Toshi up to Utica, where at the Boilermaker, she set a national age group record for 15K in the 75-79's. So, I guess you can say she's doing pretty well.
I hope Toshi doesn't mind my sharing how she wound up at Utica by mistake. Toshi had apparently seen a list of nominees for the National Distance Running Hall of Fame which included one of her idols, Miki Gorman. Toshi described seeing Miki's success just as Toshi was getting into running. Because of her name (Michiko - sp?), Toshi knew she was Japanese, and it gave her confidence and inspiration she could succeed. Thus, thinking Miki was getting into the hall, Toshi requested elite status at Utica. Needless to say, she got it. Although she later realized that Miki was not being inducted, Toshi decided to run the race anyway. Needless to say, her efforts were rewarded.
By the way, did you know Pete Squires back in your prime? Also, Bruce Robinson?

Wayne, I beleive the race was Catch the Sun Five Miler in Westfield, an all-women's race. I wasn't there the year that Grete/Patti ran, but I did sneak onto the press truck one year when Shelly Steely won. I snuck into a lot of places back then. ;-)

I was not there but I think Patti said she felt it was 3.3-5
We'll find out the real deal from her I'm sure.I'm pretty sure I saw a poster/ad that had "new distance or new course" written on it.

HI wineturtle,
The Johnny Kelly race was fabulous. What a wonderful family week-end. Golfing, harbor cruise, live music, (blues)fireworks. Race day..splendid weather, couldn't have asked for better. The 5km-10km courses were longer, though I don't know the exact distance, BR and I estimated the 5km was about 3.3-5. not 3.1 and the 10km to be about 6.4. They were measured that morning by a car. So, there you go..not short. All times were slow...nobody cared though, the race festivites and atmosphere were THAT good! After the awards, food, live music, beer and other beverages and pool party.
Paul Collier, the race director, did a fantastic job of putting together a delightful week end for everybody. A definite 'must do' for next year. I look forward to the Marathon he puts on in February another fine event. Way to go, Paulie! Thank you!

Last year I struggled to find race details for the Kelley Race on Aug 6th. I figured to post a link to the app, so here it is:

Yes, I'm going. Last year, I got to around five miles after running a pretty steady diet of little rollers and suddenly started to think about what this hill must be like. It didn't disappoint! It was a long grinder. The race is a no-frills format, all roads are open, though on most, traffic is light. Somewhere shortly after the hill there's one major road I remember crossing (and stopping some guy from crossing in front of an oncoming car). It's essentially what road racing was before it got fancified. There's a lovely lighthouse (I think used as a restaurant) near the start and finish (and more prominent at the finish). It was a lot of fun, but getting there was a bit of a schlepp.
