For the first 6 strides, CC and Gatlin are identical, then CC edges ahead in both turnover, and distance traveled.
This is the key to his relentless speed development--and by that, I mean the continuous-ness of his acceleration. Some guys have better acceleration in certain phases, and worse in other phases, but CC is continuous. He has no hitches, no lags, no irregularities. His acceleration is consistent, relentless. The balance between his stride length and frequency seems to be perfect.
Collins was a guy who also had great speed development, but who would end up cutting his stride short in favor of turnover maintenance, and thus was never able to hit the type of vmax that CC and others can hit. IMO he was imbalanced in favor of turnover.
Gatlin, OTOH, has seemed to me to have been generally imbalanced in favor of stride length. In his Doha 9.74, he went about 43.5 strides -- 3.5 strides less than CC, and 0.02 faster.
Does CC still have room to improve, considering his eggbeater mechanics, by increasing his stride length in the second half of the race?
