What is the reason or purpose of Badger miles? I know that they just round to 7min pace, regardless of actual pace. What does this do? Thanks.

Keeps one from racing himself so he is running comfortable. Lets say you are running normally at 6:00 minute pace one day and feel good. If the next day you are feeling crappy you will not be as concerned about slowing down because as far as you care you are running the same number of miles
So it is more about feeling than about pace? Does that mean they just go out for a "49 min" run and not really worry about the actual mileage covered? Wouldn't that make it hard to be that accurate for time or are they just all out and back? (Thanks for the reply).
I basicly do this. I dont say 7 min though, I use 8, eventhough at least 60% of my runs are done about 15-30 sec faster, but same idea. One of my reasons for doing this is so that when I say I ran "70 miles" this week I know 100% certain I did at least this much, and likely more. The last few times I have run courses that I have measured miles (or even 1/2's) on I notice that I am running "faster" than I usually do, or rather usually say I do. I just think its better to under-estimate mileage than over-est. Also, if I feel like shit one day and happen to be running slower or dont feel like running as far, Ill call it about the same pace eventhough it may be under. I know I have more than "made up" for the 1/2-1/4 mile shortage.

isnt that just an attempt to "trick" oneself? wont the runner actually keep track of the real miles run anyway?
from wat i've heard/read, since wisconsin (as most teams) run on trails that are not marked exactly, instead on measuring out all the courses, and worrying if everything is accurate or not, they just do is judge their runs by time instead of distance. its more of a practical usage. i know university of NC-greensboro i think use a similar system, but its called trojan miles, and its simply ever 5 minutes of running is a mile. the badger miles isn;t exactly every 7 minutes, there is a chart somewhere that shows how it works.
Oh yeah, I forgot to add: I also have this thing about when 95% of people run on trails they think they are going faster than they are. They forget little turns and rocky/stumpy/hilly areas slow you down alot. Many people think just because they ran one 6:00 mile in the run they must have averaged that.
15min=2mi
25min=3mi
30min=4mi
35min=5mi
45min=6mi
50min=7mi
60min=8mi
65min=9mi
70min=10mi
77min=11mi
85min=12mi
90min=13mi
100min=14mi
105min=15mi
no more confusion.
take it or leave it that is how it goes down in madtown.
i think there is a mistake in your little chart there buddy. 11miles = 80 min

no its not dumbass. 11miles at 7min pace is 77min. why dont YOU go and refigure it out. cant bleive there are people out there that are really this stupid.
uno momento i hope that you feel like a retard now :) dont question the system just accept it.
60min=8mi
are you retarded, high school girls run that pace for their training runs
stanford uses "Dobson miles." One Dobson mile is equal to almost exactly one mile.
I do the same thing!!! But i use 7:45. Bravo. Well said.
Watch the repeatedly at high volume and you will understand.
Oops...that should read "watch THIS."

actually we're all dumbasses.
especially checkit who says that if 15 minutes = 2 miles, then 77 minutes must equal 11 miles. something is off on your multiplication, son.
why don't you come back to my class and i'll teach you how to multiply fractions and decimals.
Listen everyone just because it doesn't equal 7 when you divide each number by the mileage doesn't mean there is a flaw. From what I heard it started back with Smith and it has worked for many many years. Besides it works for them last time I checked they are good. Plus I think they just wanted to have it come out to ever numbers of 5. that way they don't have runs of 14 minutes and 49 min. So quite complaining about something so trivial and let these guys do what they have been doing for years and has worked for them. Man people on this board really just want to complain about every little detail.
It's not a strictly 7 min. mile thing. It is ABOUT that, thus it's easier to round something like 60 minutes to 8 miles rather than 63 minutes to 9 miles...they do it in 5 minute (or so) increments, especially early in the chart so that someone can say: oh, I went out for 45 minutes--that's 6 Badger miles, rather than saying: I went out for 42 minutes--that's 6 Badger miles.
If the Kenyans or Ethiopians did it, nobody would complain. It would be a revolutionary training method. There would be 1000+ post threads about it. I guess nobody wants it to be simple.
