For example, I ran mid 5:30s in eighth grade, and recently as a junior was running low 16s for xc 5ks. I placed 20th at state xc. A teammate of mine ran around 5 flat in eighth grade, and now runs 15:40-16s and placed 10th at state.
Because of the limited running experience at that age, it’s not a perfect indicator, but I’d say anything below 5:45 or even 6 could be an indicator of some talent.
Hope this helps!
Bill Rodgers never broke 5 minutes until his senior year and only ran under 9 for 2 miles once in college.
A good time for middle school is 4:50. A time that indicates potential is 7 minutes.
It depends on the training.
A 10th grader at a local high school never beat a boy at a different middle school, losing by 20 seconds or more while in middle school.
Fast forward to high school, the slow boy is going sub 4:35/10:00 with high school training. His middle school training included:
3:30 a banana and juice box
3:40 stretch
3:50 run stairs and relay drills
4:15 talk to friends
4:30 mom picks him up from practice.
Legit doesn't matter at all. I ran 5:40s in middle school, 4:21 as a senior (and 1:54). Had another teammate run 4:45 in middle school, only run 4:27 so far (still has his senior year outdoor tho). Another guy barely finished his races in middle school, boom, 4:22 as a senior (and 9:20). Just have fun with it.

+1
chris derrick was running 19:xx for 3 miles his freshman year. 15:00 as a sophomore. 14:20 as a junior. and 13:54 at state as a senior. Just work hard, take care of the little things. And most of all, believe in yourself.
As an 8th grader I won my cities catholic schools league with over 20 schools with a 5:30, as a freshman ive been training hard and running over the winter and based on training tempo runs and other races I think Ill run 4:45-4:50 and thats an improvement mostly just from actually training and running, a 4:45 as a freshman would put me in top 25 freshman in the state, so I believe that running mid 5’s ( I ran a 6:06 as a 5th grader, 5:47 as a 6th, 5:34 as a 7th, and a 5:30 as a 8th) under 6 even is a good time to have as a middle schooler where you most likely dont do any real training ( at least I for one only did an ocassional stair workout and a 5 minute run two days a week, we only had practice two days a week) wih a base and actual running youll get much stronger and see really good results. I apoligize for grammar, I’m writing this during spanish class in a hurry.

For an untrained runner middle school runner, 4:50 is an exceptional time and for a kid training a bit, 7 minutes is really slow.
5:58 8th grade spring. 4:19.11 10th grader spring. go figure
Since I am a middle school XC and track coach, I can tell you the times of my leading runners in the 1600: 5:36 and 5:49. That was at the end of the XC season; at the beginning it was 6:16 and 6:52.
I ran a 5:06 in 7th grade and a 4;40 in 8th grade and for the 2400 I ran a 7:55 in 7th and a 7:12 in 8th grade
I remember competing with Catholic schools like in 2 meets but their was only one good runner I would always gap every one not to brag I'm just telling you
That's amazing did you run a 4:19 flat cs my school record is 4:19.02
.
That is very true I ran a 4:40 in 8th grade and for the 2400 I ran a 7:12 with no competition
When I use to compete In middle school my times where really good cs i trained all year but for a regular runner in middle school I say a 5:40 or even a 5:50 for the mile and for the 2400 I would say a 8:40 or a 9:30
What Catholic school did you go to and what state
A 4:56 for the mile and a 7:30 for the mile and a half
That's true bro it's crazy how the kids now in days are breaking the 4 minute barrier and the athletes before us struggled to break it the first man to even achieve thar was Roger bannister in 1954
