Did a bit of rain really tear him down that much? Did he get hurt during training?
Discus.

According to Matt, yes.
Needs to move to Japan and join a corporate team. As does every other elite marathon runner in America. That's not running under 2:10.
So he got chicked?
When will runners who “go hypothermic” after going out way to hard in a marathon stop blaming the weather? It obviously went fast start -> slow down -> hypothermia and not fast start -> hypothermia -> slow down.
i can imagine little worse than running a marathon in 40 degree rain. The only thing worse would be 35 degrees and rain.
In the middle of the men's race, when the lead pack was going out on 2:04 flat and 3 Japanese guys looked so smooth, I typed in the live thread that it all made no sense. Here is what I wrote, "I can't get over how relaxed these Japanese guys look running 2:04 flat pace in the cold rain. One would think this would end up being an epic blowup. "
The race reminded me of Boston where the weather eventually won and here it did against most as well.
I'm blown away the men's winner ran 2:04.
I commend Matt for going to Tokyo.
Matt's no stranger to tough races by now, he handles his disappointments with a lot of grace. He ran amazingly in December, no doubt he'll be back and strong for the trials.

34 degrees and rain might be worse.
33 degrees and rain might be worse.
...
...
And any significant wind makes it even worse.
Boston was a perfect storm of suck.

Agreed. He also deserves props for finishing. It would have been tempting to just give up rather than gut out a finish. One of the few times I will commend somebody simply for finishing a marathon.
Hopefully he got to see the sights in Tokyo
I ran a marathon in similar conditions a couple years ago and it was one of the worst racing experiences ever. Incredible the winner ran 2:04.

No Japanese runners broke 2:10 in this race.

That's because all of them Stinsoned it.

I cannot understand why he went to Tokyo. Did he get paid to run there?
Why wouldn’t you go to some place like Dubai instead? Perfect weather every year, completely flat, no wind and perfect pavement. Get couple of running buddies together who have equal ability or ask the organizers for the 2:10 pacer (or hire someone for a few hundred bucks). You are almost guaranteed to run a great time.
Only a BQ by 40mins! See! BQ'ing is more difficult than you think!
Hypothermic? Come on Matt, it wasn't even sub-freezing.
40 degrees with rain and wind is perfect for running. Yuki Kawauchi loves such conditions.
Try running in hot, humid Tokyo during a July heat wave.
I’ve changed my mind.
I’m all for Stinsoning races. We need to just ‘go for it’.
So you blow up 4 out of 5 times, but maybe that one time you could have the day where it all comes together and you drop a sub 2:10.
Too much pacing to try to run a 2:12 or whatever.
A 2:12 gets you nothing except maybe a spot on a weak American team.

This Sunday's weather will seem like paradise in comparison.
Cold and rainy weather is awesome for runners, which is why we love Oregon.
I think Matt may have hypothyroid problems or thermoregulation issues. We often think of Asians as pretty cold-intolerant people compared to whites, but at the Tokyo Marathon we saw the complete opposite.
Anybody else surprised at Matt's cold intolerance? Sure, the wind chill and rain were bad, but a lot of other runners did perfectly fine. Something's gotta be wrong with Matt.

Yes, we all knew it would be an epic blowup rojo. I'm sure that was quite obvious to most people.
Almost guaranteed yes, but only if you've got the ability to actually run 2:10 flat or faster;)
