Remember that name.
I brought up another athlete like this about 5 years ago named Sydney McGloughlin; sometimes you see something special beyond just running fast times. I try to avoid getting too excited about female youth phenoms because the batting average for future success is less than 200. But, I see something special in this athlete, namely good genetics and the way she internalizes the sport. I meet her at the NBON, where she won the 800m in 2:05:51 after running a 400 PR the day before. Btw, she has 2 more years of high school. Excellent speed (400m 52.77) and decent endurance (sub-5 mile). Athing loves to train, compete, has confidence and a good coach; you don't always get all 3. She really lucked out in having a very good coach. Coach Jennings has been around for a long-long time and knows how to bring along talented athletes. I am not a big fan of Athing's choice to not compete for her high school. I would not leave that choice to 15 yo. That's a mistake in my mind. There are a lot of advantages to going the private coaching route, but the advantages of being a member of a high school team outweigh the disadvantages. With that said, Coach Jennings knows the situation better than I do.
