You can get updates from the press conference today on the IAAF's webpage (link at the bottom of the post). A bunch of the stars at the meet got to meet the pope today. Italian sprinter Filippo Tortu took some selfies with the pope and in some of the photos of him you can see the likes of Christian Coleman, Dawn Harper Nelson, etc.

For those whose Italian is a little rusty, the IAAF says Tortu's tweet says the following: "An extraordinary emotion, a unique and unrepeatable experience together with Pope Francis and all my companions. #italiateam #GoldenGala"

Did you know...that other than at the Commonwealth Games and Shanghai, the fastest steeple by a woman this year is ALLIE OSTRANDER. 9:38 at Stanford.
but anyway, Chepkoech will probably win. Unsure what pace they're trying for, but I suspect 9:05ish wins.

It will be interesting to see what they run without Jebet in the field. She was the one that really pushed the middle kilometer to set every race up for a sub 9.
Is there anyone on here who is planning on going to the meet tomorrow and wants to meet up either before during or after to talk running/hangout? I am in Rome and would love to have someone to watch the meet with. Tried posting a thread asking but im not sure it worked came up so I figured I would try on here. I actually havent even bought a ticket yet and was wondering if anyone who has been to this meet before could recomend if its worth the extra euros to buy one on the home strech or just go with the cheap 7 euro tickets on the back curve? Im planning on just attending the main program so showing up around 8pm tomorrow.
Coburn is skinny blonde like Evan Jager, who confirmed as a doper by Fancy Bears, which is most for sure source on internets. There is NO EVIDENCE she is not doping to gills!

FALSE
Emma Coburn does not have gills. You hear that? NO GILLS. So she can't be a doper. And she's the voice of our generation so she can't be a doper.
Warholm or Samba in the 400 m hurdles?
I would love to see samba continue the amazing form he showed in Doha, but I somehow feel like he wonn't break 48 again this year...
What kind of name is "Tortu" for a sprinter?
Hyvin Kiyeng ran 8:30 in the flat in Doha yet people don't think she'll factor? Beatrice Chepkoech has obviously chosen to improve her speed running 1500s in this non championship year. She was run very close by Norah Jeruto so I don't think she'll win. I agree Ruth Jebet is the only one that made pushed to make those sub nines possible and they won't be running as fast with her gone.

Who's saying Kiyeng won't factor? We picked her to win in the preview.
Just a withered old man in a robe.

Haven't read the preview yet, but she's not in the poll, that's why.
It would be even cooler if Tortu's first name was Achille, not Filippo.

You are a sick individual.
I found a few articles on the the meet. Here are the US athletes that met the pope - Coleman, Kyra efferson, Jade Stepter and Dawn Harper-Nelson.

Update: One big subplot of the men's 100 is whether Italy's national record of 10.01 from 1979 which is held by Pietro Mennea, the 1980 Olympic 200 champ whom the meet is named after, will be broken. 19-year-old Filippo Tortu ran 10.03 last week. Plus fellow Italian Marcell Jacobs, 23, ran 10.08 in the same race. Jacobs was actually US-born (El Paso) as his dad is American but his mom returned to Italy when he was still a child.
Pietro Mennea held the 200 meter world record for 17 years, (by 19.72, a time many thought was unbeatable, until Michael Johnson proved them wrong at the Atlanta olympics). Pietro was an european hero.
The answer to the Coburn question is "no". There are too many runners at her level, and the steeplechase is evolving rapidly. In the Diamond League I would expect winning times to be 9:05 or better. I don't think Coburn can consistently run close to that pace.
