A cultural question, not racist by any means, do Kenyans or east Africans in their big group training use deodorant? Or they don’t bother to do it? Is body odor less of an issue there? Is this more of a western issue to prevent body odor?

I doubt it. Kenyans are as minimalistic as you can get.
Some people don't tend to smell as much and never really have to use deodorant. For some reason, Americans smell way more.
Growing up in kenya we didn’t even use deodorant and we didn’t smell bad. We could run and just shower no deodorant, but when I moved to USA to run for college I could smell so bad I had to ask my friends from Kenya if they noticed too when they trained in US. I just think it’s good here. My first deodorant was US
Know people (eating vegan) who practically don't smell unless they wear their shirt for more than 4 days or when they get sick.
