DACA: We The People need to understand that Withholding Mercy is not necessarily Immoral. I am trying to put this into terms that everyone can relate to, even if we do not share the same worldview:
Illegal immigration is, by definition, punishable by law. Although the children of illegal immigrants may have done nothing wrong, innocent children are affected by the criminal actions of their parents every day. Legally, there should be consequences; I feel like most everyone agrees on this point. [The only difference between incarceration of the parents (for other crimes) vs deportation of the parents (for being here illegally) is that deportation gives us the opportunity to keep the affected families united.]
The point of divergence is whether or not repealing DACA is Moral. Let's agree on this: to withhold punishment of criminals would be an act of Mercy. Mercy ≠Morality; it is perfectly moral to punish wrongdoers, even if loved ones are affected by the punishment.
Therefore, if you want to argue that we should continue DACA, that is fine. Just please refer to your wishes as an act of Mercy, not Morality, because there is nothing moral about withholding punishment for a crime.
