Already happening in US. Will the sport survive??

No
They'll just move up to the 100 (mile)
Every country has people of Chinese ancestry representing them in Olympic ping-pong. It just brings the level of ping-pong up everywhere. Don't see how that's possibly a bad thing.

And ping pong is even less popular than distance running.
Won't happen. They are only good because of the lack of drug tests in Africa. Once they live here or in the UK etc., the Africans have to compete clean and will thus be your everyday average runner.

The sport may not survive, but then the Olympics would actually determine the world's best. The fields are watered down now.
Don't get wrong - I prefer it the way it is and hope you're wrong. However, there is no doubt that a combined Kenyan/Ethiopian championship where each country could send like 15-18 athletes would be more competitive than WCs/OGs in all events 1500m on up.
The emphasis on the Olympics and World Champs are why the sport is failing.
Even the biggest MLB fans don't give a care about the World Baseball Classic. NBA fans don't follow Olympic basketball with anywhere near the amount of emotional investment.
We need at least 16 teams, based in North America, consisting of international athletes, who compete as their city's club.

Exactly! Look no further than the shining microcosm example of the Tracktown Series! Look how popular and spectacular it is.
They need to let all of the top runners compete at the Olympics and World Championships instead of no more than three or four per event per country.
Interesting how Kenyan/Ethiopian domince is supposed to adversely affect the sport's popularity while monochromatic favourites like swimming and cycling continue to flourish.

It's a niche sport and has been for a long time. Always will be. "Fix" it with the core audience in mind.
No, no, no, hell no, no teams. That was already on display this year to remind people nobody cares about teams, for those who forgot from when they were in school. It's all about who goes fast.
In the same vein, no more representing countries. Get rid of the nation vs nation champs. Flag-draped victory laps make me puke.
The solution is to return Diamond League to being a points championship, and after Brussels, have a world finals. 6 of the 8 finalists will be selected by world rank, and the other 2 by DL rank. If any are the same people then the next world ranker gets in.

Like
Swimming is starting show that athletes in (50 & 100) metres can dispel certain myths. See Cullen Jones, Anthony Ervin, Simone Manuel and Lia Neal.
Just stumbled across this post, coincidentally almost exactly 5 years after it was posted.
