I was recently reading about the college coaches in the PSAC who were part of teacher / coaches union that was planning to go on strike this fall due to disagreements with their contracts.
With the strength of the membership and organization of the USTFCCCA why has there never been a college coaches union formed?
It is amazing with all the committees and meetings that they have with all of their divisions year around and the national convention that they still have such little power when it comes to influencing the NCAA (and NAIA). When it comes to major decisions like post-season championship sites, qualifying processes, standards, schedules, coaches job security, etc. the coaches as individuals have zero power in the decision-making process past the coaches association.
Coaches can hash out and debate all of the ideas, proposals and complain among themselves if they want. But even if they decide to vote on something and the majority agrees on it, it still has zero bearing on what and how College Administrators, the NCAA XC / Track&Field Sport Committee, Championships Committee and Management Council decide that they want to do things.
Having a union in other professions extends to other areas like job security, liability insurance, etc. Just having a union is basically strength in numbers instead of people feeling like they are on an island or afraid to make statements, opinions or ruffle feathers and lose their jobs.
Here's example for you; why are xc and track &field the only sports in college athletics where the coach has to coach, recruit for and manage both genders (teams) at the same time, not to mention for a total of six seasons per year? Think about that for all other sports, they would think that is insane. But since college coaches have no one backing them, they are afraid to challenge administration or question why things are the way that they are whether that be job demands, contracts, post-season qualifying processes, etc.
Just food for thought. Almost every major profession has a union, that's how the employees have a voice and are not taken advantage of.
Any lawyers out there who have advice, experience in those matters? How are unions formed?
