Members of the Florida State University track team were arrested after a homemade explosive went off outside the home of a coach.
Several people called the Tallahassee Police Department about 10:30 p.m. Friday after hearing a loud boom on West Ninth Avenue, according to Lt. Edward Smith. Witnesses saw several men running from the home and getting into a brown car before driving away.
The coach told police he thought someone threw an explosive at his house as part of a prank, Smith said. No damage or injuries were reported.
Police recovered four explosive devices that were made with several different chemicals, according to Smith. The Tallahassee Fire Department and the TPD Bomb Squad aided in the investigation.
Four men eventually returned to the scene and were taken to TPD, where they admitted they had taken part in the incident. Smith said he was unsure what prompted the men to return.
All are members of the FSU track team, police said.
Those arrested were Patrick Brett, 23; Kevin Cook, 19; Johannes Tigchelaar, 21; and James Wilson, 18. They were charged with possessing or discharging a destructive device and held in the Leon County Jail.
If convicted, the men could face five years in prison on the third-degree felony charge.
Tigchelaar was identified on an FSU Web site roster as a distance runner and team captain. Cook also was listed as a distance runner. Further information about Brett and Wilson was not immediately available.
FSU sports officials could not be reached for comment. The name of the coach could not be verified Saturday.
