Who has ran the best collegiate DMR leg?
Who has ran the best collegiate DMR leg?
Didn't Don Paige once go well under 2:50 for a 1200 leg once? If so, that would have to be among the best.
The fastest 1200's and 1600's from Penn Relays are:
1200
Mark Belger, Villanova, 1977, 2:50.1
Charles Cheruiyot, Mount St. Mary's, 1987, 2:50.9
John Keyworth, Villanova, 1986, 2:51.1
1600
Seneca Lassiter, Arkansas, 1999, 3:54.3y
Kip Cheruiyot, Mount St. Mary's, 1989, 3:53.0
Joe Falcon, Arkansas, 1989, 3:53.8
of course, Penn's fastest I believe is the American Record
Arkansas 9:21.10
Reuben Reina 2:53.9
Charles Williams 46.4
Robert Bradley 1:46.0
Joe Falcon 3:53.8
Bill, I was thinking Paige split a 2:47 around '79 or '80, but I also thought it was at Penn so I must be mistaken. Thanks for the info.
I think David Kimani ran some sick split last year in the mile. He was in 9th when he got the stick and most of the milers were around 4:00
Also 1987
Roddie Haley 43.9
it may not be the quickest ever, but for anyone else who was there they know that kimani's 1600 dmr leg at the 2000 alabama relays was very, very impressive, it was when he was still running for south alabama (they had a good dmr) and when he got the baton he was probably 50-60 or so meters behind, i cant remember the exact distance, anyway he actually got the baton behind the dmr exchange zone and his team was eventually disqualified because of it, but in the race he walked down drew griffin (3:41 guy from uga and tim broe from bama) everybody had their own guess at what his time actually was, i think it was around 355 but if you factor setting and situation into the equation-this was one of the best in recent memory
I am looking for record of Seneca's DMR split at Iowa State, either 1997 or 1999. I believe it was '97 when they ran 9:27ish....I have heard rumours of a 2:48
Rodney "Comet Haley-Arkansas 400m 44....Penn Relays 1984-5?
My personal favorite was Gabe throwing the hammer down on James Karanu at the 2000 NCAA Indoor. I think Gabe ran about 2:51, but Karanu went out in 1:53 and then just bit it -- the Arkansas fans were going nuts and then Gabe just flies by Karanu with about 300 to go.
Seneca's leg at the ISU meet was close to, but not under 2:50. I was there. I don't remember the details, but 2:52-2:53 sticks in my mind.
YES. Seneca split 2:49 at the oversized(300m) Iowa State Track. It was insane because he destroyed everyone. Stanford still beat them at NCAA's that indoor season though because Seneca was an idiot and did the 800m/1500m double, without much luck.
I believe I remember watching Kimani blow by me last year from behind at NCAA's. I split 3:59 and i think he split around 3:53 low.... Damn quick!
Bowen Field House 1995:
Arkansas makes the trip to Ypsi..
Paul McMullen chasing down Graham Hood in the mile. EMU finishes second despite McMullen running 3 seconds faster than Hood. 3:57 vs. 4:00 respectively.
Speaking of EMU, there was guy in 93 or 94 indoors that ran the gutsiest leg I've seen. I think he ran like 2:53 in indianapolis which isn't so out of the realm of possibility. But he did hand it off with the leaders, and the dude was good, but not that good... He just really nutted-up that day.
I think you are thinking about Jason Boothroyd's carry indoors at Indy. He just totally gutted out a great leg and then puked all over the staging area chairs afterward. I was there with an old college teammate and we were just screaming for Eastern (Us old MAC guys gotta stick together) and it was like he just fed off the crowd and willed himself to a great leg. Didn't Eastern win a DMR title in the Earl Jones days?
Hey, I'll tell you what...Jayson Boothroyd was tough as nails. He was nearly as old as me but he was ferkin tough.
His senior year he lost a mile to a freshman on the team, Kevin Anderson. But I'll tell you what...that was a ferkin fluke. The kid never ran that fast again.
Boothroyd was damn harry too.
Boothroyd!! That's it you got it. Thanks (Hoof whammies to you - but not from me).
Funny, cause I almost thought about not posting it cause I didn't have the name. What? maybe 4000 people total there (many not interested in a distance event) 8+ yrs ago? What's the chances that someone saw the same great leg I did? Most focus on their own team.
But, you saw the same great carry from an "ordinary" tough runner. Very confirming for me.
I believe Kimani's split in the DMR from his freshman year at the Alabama relays was 3:52.
Probably not worthy of rank with some of the other posts here, but around '81, an SMU Kenyan at Illinois oversized indoor track versus Arkansas among other great teams ran a 3/4 (not meters) in 2:52. It was the way he did it however. :61, :60, :51. Nial O'Shaunessey ran Arkansas' anchor approx. 3:57 to nip SMU at the line.
