Is Centro better than Webb?
Is Centro better than Webb?
No
no.
yes. he's always in the conversation for global medals. webb never was.
yes
Of course he it. Webb ran a couple decent time trials, but never put up a decent finish when it counted.
Even Webb admitted Centro has had a better career. Webb is a student of the sport, and a gracious, honest one at that.
Centro has run faster over 1500 (which is a better performance than the mile record) and has two global medals and a fourth at the Olympics. He has won more U.S. titles (4 to 3). So yes. He's also not a headcase, so he probably has years to go. I could see him running 3:28 or 3:29 and 12:50 something at some point, and worlds and Olympics are always a crapshoot, so he may win a title eventually.
Webb is a better person
...but Centro has had the better career.
No.Setting a PR while winning 10th place last year against the world's best is not very good. Also, fading to 8th place at the World Championships. Also, fading to 11th place at Stockholm last year.

Centro won world indoors. It doesn't carry the same weight as an outdoor title, but it's still significant. Webb would be an afterthought if he hadn't run 3:53 in high school. Leo has had a better career than Webb, too.
8th, 10th and 11th place finishes, two while fading, against the best 1500 runners is all you need to know.

Are you aware that Webb has the AR in the mile?
The mile record is considerably slower than the 1500 record, the one that matters. The mile is hardly even run anymore, outside of indoors in the U.S.

Or if he hadn't:
Run 3:46
Run 3:30
Run 1:43
Run 8:11
Run 13:10
Beat a 32 year old Lagat multiple times
Inspired a generation of runners.

3:46.91 for 1 mile converts to 3:30.16 per

I mean obviously he's had a much more impressive career than Webb. Two-time world championship medallist, Olympic 4th, world indoor gold, 3:30 pr... I mean come on...
He surpassed Webb in his first couple of months as a pro. WC medal > anything Webb ever did.

Webb HS record setter. Faster mile time. Faster 1500c time. Centro in 2015, eight, tenth, and eleventh place finishes in meets against the best. How is Centro better?

Today's 5k runners can't even beat a 41 year old Lagat!
