Sean Torpy from Sandburg ran 1:47.95 tonight at the Midwest Distance Classic. His twin brother Chris was 2nd in 1:49.80. Last week they ran 4:05.10y and 4:07.13y respectively. Both are heading to Miami of Ohio next year.

They are insane. 2 weeks ago, at the state meet, their team ran 7:37 to break the state record too. They are on fire this season.
One passed the other with about 120m to go.
Seriously why aren't people talking about this. 1:49.8 is fantastic, but 1:47.95 is insane. I hate comparing Sean to Brazier, but both their 800 times and mile times from their senior year are very similar.
I think they are both running the mile at Brooks PR next week. Honestly with 1:47.95 speed, a time of 4:00 or 4:01 is not out of the question. I don't want to jinx anything....but maybe another "lowkey" sub 4?????????

Difference is that people thought Brazier would run faster than he did in HS, and now faster in his freshman year than people thought he would. Both big stories for different reasons.
I'd say Sean Torpy is more similar to Elijah Greer (1:47.68 as a junior, 3:49 for 1500m as a senior).
Does anyone have insight about their training program? They had tremendous success in cross country at 5k and now 1:47.9. Is it run off the same high mileage program or is it different?
Damn! Slagowski, Mcgorty, Hunter and Lomong have their work cut out for them. I think this year is the most sub-1:50's ever for high school kids: Torpy brothers, Slagowski, Mcgorty, Hunter, Lomong = 6 under 1:50?! Unless I'm missing someone else. Same with the mile - this seems like the deepest high school class in the mile too given that 2 guys have broken 4 and then Tamagno and Ratcliffe are at 4:01...along with a bunch of other guys getting close.

Just kidding...10 guys have gone under 1:50 this year - damn!
This is just an incredible year. On these boards, I hear only of the top performances and with the standard this year being 3:58, I had never even heard of these kids. They should certainly make the fortune of the Miami of Ohio track program if they continue to develop. What kind of xc ability and speed do they have?
Devin Dixon from Georgia is another sub 1:50 guy, 1:49.5. Also 46.9 for 400 and 16:08 for cross country. Going to Texas A and M next year
I wonder how much any of this coincides with either:
1. PEDs or
2. New paradigm of 800m training focusing on speed and strength (as opposed to high mileage), coinciding with the arrival of Rudisha and Amos.
This is too large a group to be considered a coincidence or a fluke.
Back in my day you were lucky if you saw one kid break 1:50, and more often than not 1:50 would win nationals.
Crazy fast. Sandburg must have one of the best record boards with lukas and now this
They're both going to Miami University in Ohio.
In the UK we have five seventeen year olds sub 1.50, all still with a year to go in high school! Exciting stuff!

In Ireland, we had a 14 year old run 1.55. Just as fast as Jakob Ingibritsen at the same age.
Miami of Ohio,why?
Fantastic time and more depth certainly, but Doug Herron ran 1:48.0x back in 1985 out of Alaska, not exactly fertile training ground. So the potential is always there. Guys do a lot more training nowadays though.
I don't think kids train more. There are more ideas and variations in the training. It's individualized.
Huge pick up for Miami Oh. They must have liked something and obviously there are really good coaches everywhere.

Not the year with the most under 1:50 (2012 had 14), but definitely the strongest group.

In Kenya we had 243 seventeen year olds run sub 1.50 last year.
