Lakewood is at about 5,500 ft. altitude.
And she is a junior who just started running last fall for cross-country. This girl may be a big time talent…like Michael Slagowski.
Brie Oakley.
This is a name we will hear a lot in the future.
True, Oakley broke Fairchild's 5A classification state meet record. However, the all-classification state meet record belongs to Elise Cranny from three years ago at 10:17.
Additionally, Fairchild ran 10:21 during the "regular" season. Then again Oakley ran 10:27 at a meet just two weeks ago. Lauren Gregory, last year's 5A champ, was injured over the winter and is just getting back into shape. She ran 10:25 during the spring last year.
Correct, though, Oakley is amazing!!
Didn't Melody Fairchild break 10 minutes, at some point, indoors???
Really? How is this newsworthy? It wasn't even a PR.

It's newsworthy because Fairchild is an epic name in the annals of high school girls distance running.
Yes, Fairchild did break 10 minutes indoors when she set the national high school record, indoors or out, of 9:55.
As expected, just minutes ago Katie Rainsberger ran 10:23 to win the 4A classification - faster than Oakley's run this year!
Rainsberger has gone 4:39 at sea level and 4:44 at altitude this spring along with her 4:14 for 1500!
