I'm fairly surprised by the superlatives being thrown around about Hunter's FLCC race (e.g., the most dominating since Solinsky's!) and about the kid himself (the next H.S. Jim Ryun or Alan Webb!).
We'll see about that last one. I wish him all the best, but it's myopia at its best.
When I think of dominating performances at Footlocker, it's hard to forget that of Verzbicas in 2010. After an opening 4:45 w/ Zeneselassie and the two of them breaking away, he turns on the afterburners at 2 miles and, boom, instantly the race is over. Coming down the last straight he's loping along, smiling, waving at the crowd, and then slows to a jog and then a freaking walk right before the line … still finishing in 14:59 and beating Futsum by 11 seconds (almost the identical gap between Hunter & Rocha.) If that wasn't a dominating performance, well, I don't know what is.
To me it looked like Hunter was maxed out coming into home, and both Rocha and Veatch gained on him over the last mile.
