Because freshpeople doesn't roll off the tongue as well as frosh.
Big 10 people don't know how to spell. Kinda stuck after that.
Bein a freshman in high school I can answer this.
1. Frosh sounds better than freshman, it just does.
2. Frosh is a term used to describe underclassmen, meaning sophmores too. So when they say Frosh, it can mean freshman or sophmore.
Ahem. Maybe in your school, but not in common usage.
And no, I don't know why folks put the "o" instead of the e, BUT, I'm pretty sure the Ivies (and possibly others) were using the term well before others. And if not, they do know, ad nauseum.
Your right about the Big 10 being kind of stupid. Isn't it Penn State that yells out "WE ARE . . . PENN STATE!" at their football games? They act like the other team forgot who they are playing or something. Or maybe it is because the Nittany Lions forgot what school they went to. Either way, they are kind of retarded.
