It's a tape with beeps that are in a rythmic pace. As the tape goes on, the beeps get faster. The object is to run 20 meters between each beep. When you can now longer keep up, your done. Your VO2 max is measured by what stage you reached. Our rugby team does this.
Our womens soccer team uses it. the results seem a little questionable in my opinion.
It's called the "Pacer" test. It is like any other Vo2max test that is given to general population- it is an estimate. Rockport walking test, YMCA step test are a few others. For an athlete the reliability is pretty low when compared to the traditional metabolic tests.
