This weekend, I finally found time to read Toni Reavis article on the Big 3 - Hall, Ritz, and Webb - and how all are struggling except for Ritz. http://tonireavis.com/2015/03/17/big-3-down-to-1/#more-12835It's got a lot of great insight including how Hall's buildup before his 2:04 was awful but this was quote stunned me.

“He was essentially a 4:00 miler in high school and the Mt. Sac cross country course record holder. Irv sent me his workouts. They were at a very high level. I think he could have run close to a 2:10 (marathon) in high school. I had an athlete, Steve Ortiz, who ran 2:13 as a college junior, and Ryan was doing harder workouts in high school. And when he was at Stanford they ran hard, because of all the talent that was there.
It's an interesting thought. Hall was a 3:43 guy in HS and he's a better marathoner than miler.
But a 2:10 marathon is way out there. I guess "close to 2:10" might be 2:12. But 2:12 is equivalent to like a 3:54 mile according to JK.
What did Gompers run? What's the US high school record?
What do you think Hall could have run for 26.2 in HS?
