Maybe it's just me.
I assume you all know the feeling I'm talking about. You're cruising along on a run and all of a sudden (you don't notice the transition) your feet are floating six feet off the pavement, there's a big smile on your face, you feel like you can run forever, and you don't want to pull back into the driveway when it's over. Honking cars and barking dogs don't bother you. You wave and smile back at them, and mean it.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, you got shortchanged at birth. You need to pick another sport.
Anyway, here's the thing. I was driving to work today with the CD player on loud. Dire Straits Love Over Gold is on. Halfway through Telegraph Road (7 or 8 minutes in) the clever historical lyrics end and the purely instrumental part begins. There's 7 or 8 minutes of multiple guitars, piano/keyboard, drums, etc. My brain starts trying to follow the multiple complex guitar lines (it's going all over the place). Halfway into this, I notice the big grin on my face. Lucky noone's in the truck to hear me singing the guitar parts. Anyway, I'm floating, and can't help but notice how similar the feeling is to the running-induced endorphin rush.
I've noticed this feeling many times before, but never drew the parallel to my running. I'll often drift out of full consciousness in the middle of especially brilliant guitar playing. Drives my wife nuts (or drives me nuts when she tries to interrupt me). You recognize I'm in the zone by the grin on my face. Only happens with guitar, and only really good guitar playing.
Is that especially weird, or can anyone else relate?
