I've never heard of that guy. I realize it isn't run very often but someone smarter than me fill me in.

Brycen Spratling is his name. Went to Pitt.

Claim to fame before today was he was 2nd in NCAA indoors in 2012. 4th at NCAA outdoors last year and made USATF final.
Tremendous run.
Sprawling owns the college record in the 500 and was #5 on the all-time world list heading into the meet. Not a huge surprise here, since the other 400 guys weren't stars either.

It's a weak WR. I've seen 48 guys go under 1:02
Worth a 45.7 400m. Good but not headline.

Yeah right…..and I saw 48 guys go under 4:02 until Bannister broke 4. And who were some of those guys you've seen go under 1:02??? You mean guys like LaShawn Merrit who has had plenty of cracks at it? Weak record my arse.
Funny thing is his indoor PR is 45.8 from three years ago. He should be able to get under his 45.09 PR outdoors this year.

Was surprised when I heard this was the world record, since I'm reading the John McDonnell book right now & it says how Roddie Haley of Arkansas broke 1 minute in the 500m twice, at NCAAs in '86 & '87...including a 59.82 on a 10-lap-to-the-mile board track! But technicalities have kept the 1-minute barrier intact...

Did you just start following the sport? Any track fan would know he meant 48 sec 400 runners, not 48 guys.
