Weather: cold, course with patches of snow
Edith Masai held off the challenge of Ethopia's rising star Worknesh Kidane, finishing the 6.8k course in 23 minutes and 38 seconds. Fatiha Bauof of Belguim was third.

Kenenisa Bekele storms to win. the guy just looked as if he was floating along, an awsome talent for the age of 20. I just want to see this guy run on the track.
Anne Keenan Buckley and Maria McCambridge raised Irish cheers when securing 4th and 5th after leading early on.
In the main course men's event Kenenise Bekele powered to victory, opening a hefty gap on Sammy Kipketer (2nd). Paul Kosgei held off a late charge from James Kipketer for 3rd. Rob Burchill (sp?) put in a surprisingly good run to take 5th, the top 5 being far, far away from the rest of the field.
I didn't realise how powerfully build Bekele was before watching this race.

I watched it live on the BBC in the UK with Brendan Foster and Steve Cram comentating. It does snow about this time in the UK from about January to March, but we did have a moderate snowfall the nigh before the race with about 2" of snow in about 4 hrs, the ground was pretty churned up with boggy mud ankle deep in places. It was a pretty low turn out for the races though with only about 20-30 people in each race but good competitive races. Rob Whalley a 34ry old won the mens 4k beating the like of John Mayock and Michael East our top 1500m guys.
4k X/C is probably Rob Whalley's best event - he has made the UK team a few times. You don't hear about for ages then he sudenly pops up from nowhere. He often seems to be ill or injured and so has never fulfiilled his potential on the track.
the course was said to be 8,800 meters, 29 minutes was the winning time>? was it that horrible over there? jesus, guys like kipketer can break 13 for the 5k and 27 for the 10k and they run that slow for 8,800 meters?
The conditions were horrible, they were nearly swimming in places, and the course didn't seem designed for speed (there were barriers of some sort!).
