Where is the best place for an asthmatic runner to live?
I live in Bend, Oregon. Many retired firefighters have moved here because it has both clean and very dry air. It seems to help.
The elevation isn't too bad(Central Oregon towns range between 2,700 and 4,300 feet).
I think it is the dry air that helps.
definitely high altitude, i did an altitude chamber therapy and my situation improved significant.
What is involved in the chamber treatment? I never thought going to high altitude would improve an asthma situation. Due to the thin air, etc.
Thanks
San Diego was great. I had problems in both the Northeast and Southeast.
Asthma is the worst in areas where air quality is terrible. High altitude areas usually have cleaner air because of the cold weather. I think that moisture in the air can cause Asthma to act up as well.
i also read from a snowboard-pro who suffered from asthma as a child(couldn't even walk fast without cortisone),
he just spent most of a year in the mountains snowboardin, after that year his vital-capacity was as high as that of an professional endurance athlete and had never asthmatic troubles again.
If your asthma is triggered by pollutants and dust mites you will be much better at altitude. Dust mites can't survive above 1500m and the air is cleaner. Also altitide training makes your lungs stronger so helps you cope with asthma better.

Childhood asthma isn't necessarily the same as asthma. I've known lots of people (myself included) who had asthma as a child and "outgrew" it. One comment about Oregon, as well - the pollen can be pretty bad there, which doesn't help asthma. I should qualify that- I have heard that the pollen levels in Eugene are horrific in the spring/summer. I don't know about Bend.
