I think that he probably did. I saw a picture of him on the net and his eyes looked so baked. Plus he was a big partier and a big drinker. What do you think?

No way, his drinking was way overplayed in both movies. If Pre did everything in his power to win the Olympic Gold, I doubt he would be that stupid. He didn't even drink that much. Stupid people, when will you learn that Hollywood does not dictate the truth.
If he did, none of you guys would ever hear about it. No one is going to go around announcing all of his 'bad' habits. We will never know for sure...
for some reason i doubt he toked up, and agree that his drinking was most likely sensationalized, however, in kenny moore's best efforts, the american marathoner talks about pre "livening up" formalities with another athlete with something wrapped in a brown paper bag, which makes me wonder what isnt fit to print...
I would guess that he was the party hardy type. Almost everyone back then was.
Who cares?! Let the man rest in peace!
I have asked this guy named KENNY MOORE about that very thing a while back-he said NO!
OF course..everyone did in the 70s
we used to brag about how much we drank the night before our sunday long ones..it was considered a badge of honor..
you young guys worry to much to ever run fast
it's all fun and games until someone flips their MG

Not almost everyone back then was. You need to get learn history from somehting other than the movies. By the way, there weren't that many hippies in the 60's either. The majority of Americans have always lived pretty typical lifestyles ...
ya gotta live on the edge if you want to really be successful.
every days run should finish one step prior to injury.
most live lives of quiet desparation and never really know happiness - my guess is that Pre experienced many of lifes highs that 99.99% of people will never get to

His drinking was overplayed? Are you kidding? The night he died he was over the legal limit according to the tests done on him (I saw somewhere perhaps they were flawed but nonetheless they had him twice the limit) and yet one of the movies showed him drinking a coke.
I thought it was ridiculous to sugar coat the issue. Frank Shorter said he was fine and got a ride home with him, but there is no doubt Pre was drinking that night.
I think it is apparant that he was probably an alcoholic according to todays standards that determines binge drinking as 5 or more drinks. This means that 30 to 50 percent of every runner I've known is alcoholic as well if you believe that standard.
In the book it states that he had 6 beers the night he died and mentions this as being well below his usual amount, which means he obviously got hammered a lot. And if Shorter felt he was o.k. to drive he probably had a high tolerance, another sign of alcoholism.
So I agree that the drinking was "underplayed" in the movies if anything.
As much as Steve Prefontaine is idolized by so many, you gotta wonder what people would be saying about him if he had killed not only himself that night but someone else as well......say maybe Shorter, or just some other unlucky person who was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Cannabis and other alterants were abundant on any West Coast campus in the '70's. If anything, popular portrayals of the era UNDERrepresent the usage, at least on this side of the map.
And it caught up to some.
Dick Quax smoked a fair amount of pot. Freely admitted it.
Being a binge drinker and being an alcoholic are different things. Especially when binge drinking is defined as 4 drinks in an evening.
" Binge drinking is defined as four drinks in an evening" and alchoholism is defined by what?
0-2 social drinker; 1-3 moderate drinker; 3 or more heavy drinker. This is per day so get to your meetings you little booze heads.
WHAT THE HELL PURPOSE DOES IT SERVE TO KNOW ONE WAY OR THE OTHER?
