Physiologically, during hard exercise, blood is shunted away from vital organs and the brain to supply the extra need for the working tissues (in running, obviously, the legs). I don't know about this actually killing brain cells, however, because blood is being shunted away from the brain, this is probably the reason you can't "think for shit" for a while. I certainly know where you're coming from.
The Brain always has enough O2. How many people do you see running till they passout? Exactly none.
Better re-take your physiology class. The human body prioritizes it's allocation of resources in this order: 1) brain 2) vital organs 3) musculature - with a heavy emphasis on the brain's primacy. The brain is so greedy it won't allow its valuable stash of reserved glycogen to be wasted on something as frivilous as athletic activity. It will simply shut down the offending activity first. In case of famine, the brain will simply starve the vital organs to death before it allows itself to go without. Your brain is King. It's good to be King.

I often suffer from reduced brain function for a couple of hours after a hard workout. I've long assumed it was due to dehydration - similar to the fuzzy brain you get the morning of a hangover, which I thought is also due to dehydration. Never thought about whether brain cells were dying off (after running, anyway), but my memory isn't what it used to be.
Malmo he wants to know about post workout fatigue. Would you go along with a lack of Branch Chain Amino Acids & Glycogen at that point? Both I believe have been found to cause fatigue.
