My gym just installed one of these gizmos intended to simulate training at 9000 feet. Is there any benefit to treadmilling in one of these once a week or so? If not, how often, if at all? Input much appreciated!!!

Uh...have you asked them if you can sleep in it at night?
9k ft is ridiculous. 5k is good though, and if you can live in it, that would actually be better. But running may or may not have a positive effect on this one babe...
Runnerbabe, have you been reading the 'too high to train' thread. If not, take a look. Might be some info there that'll help. Sounds like 9000' is a bit high but a couple times a week on a treadmill should be okay. Results could be hard to determine but I wouldn't let that stop you from trying!
Move to Zhongdian, Yunnan Province, CHINA. 10,500 feet of spiritually-enriching beauty. Took me all of 2 days to get used to training up there (after 2 weeks at 6,200 feet).
The whole city and surrounding valley is an altitude-chamber!!!

Thanks guys- 9000 seemed high to me, too, but I'm told you can set the thing for lower elevations. Much rather be in the mountains, though. Has anyone out there actually run in one of these things?
7000 feet is optimal for this sort of thing, but I doubt how effective it can really be if you are not in the real altitude all the time, but I could be wrong.
I would think it would be like running hills, as far as the difficulty. Just another way to add difficulty to your runs.
According to the East Germans (who had by far the most experience with simulated altitude training in the world from 1970 until 1990) 3000 meters (9000 feet) is indeed the perfect altitude. For only active periods at altitude (when you only do training there) you should stay around 3000 meters. Lower is a waste of time. At natural altitude the story is different when you are there 24 hrs a day. Even 1600 meters can be fine for starters.

Marius, Zhongdian is the perfect place then.....COME ON OUT TO CRAZY ASS CHINA!!!!
Yours Jason
Thanks for the opinions on altitude level. Anyone have an idea as to how often one needs to train in the chamber in order to reap any benefits?
