After cross country season I took a few weeks fairly easy with some low mileage eventually starting back last week at about 70 miles. Unfortunately the area in which I live was pounded with over a foot of snow. The roads were unclear for several of my 70 mile week but I pushed it anyway, getting in my mileage, which was somewhat lower than what I had planned. I got a new pair of shoes in the middle of the week after my old ones were pretty far gone. The new shoes, the model wasn't new to me, ended up rubbing the outside of my ankle raw and staining part of the shoes a rusty brown. Not noticing I probably started compensating for the pain by running on the inside of my foot. Shortly thereafter I began feeling a dull pain in the oustide of my right calf, increasing to a localized sharp pain toward the end of the run in the same leg which was bothered by the shoe, just below the outside of the knee, right below where the IT band connects to the leg. Now the question is: What could have been the cause of this, the stress of the slick snow, the compensating for the shoe problem, the jump in mileage (from about 40s to 70) or a combination of all three? And also, what can be done to help this? I am currently still running on it, I took yesterday off and today I am running again with a bit of pain. Sorry for the lenght of this post. Thanks a lot.
