I ran for about a year. 10-12 miles per week. All runs were hard runs, mostly 3-4 miles 3 or 4 times per week. Jumped in some 5ks and ran them at 21:30-21:35. I'm 33 years old.
Decent time considering the background?

Not too shabby. No long runs I'm guessing. With a more proper structured program those times should fall considerably.
I would say you have a bit of ability - enough to get down under 17:00 after about a year of proper training - your age isn't really a factor yet. Find a way to get in a weekly long run of 10-12 miles, up the mileage overall through the week, add some intervals, and you should see dramatic improvements.
I'm curious, Willy. How many miles do you get in a week? How many packs of cigrettes would you say that you smoke per day?
Ball and Chain, you should consider slowing down and running a lot of miles. Try running 1 hour a day.
If you feel good, run fast. If you feel not-so-good, slow down.

What about speedwork?
catman,
Dude, what is your deal? Why is it necessary that you know how many miles per week I run, my PRs, my bench press? As far as cigarettes go, I have never smoked one - never smoked anything for that matter.
My running resume without PRs is as follows:
I was a pretty good high school runner - good enough to get some scholarship offers, but this was in 1985, and if you know anything about high school runners in 1985, that isn't saying much - after Scott Fry there was a HUGE dropoff. My high school times would not gain any offers if I ran them today.
I was the No. 1 distance guy on my college team. We had a group with slightly above average talent.
I have run several marathons and a couple of ultras
In the late 80s/early 90s, I was a competitive local runner winning several road races in the very competitive San Francisco Bay Area. During this time I ran anywhere from 70-120+ miles per week.
I no longer run the mega mileage I did, but I still manage a long run of 10-13 miles each week unless I'm marathon training, and then it goes up of course.
Any more questions? The above should appease you. Too many more questions and I'll know that you are just being a bother and I will likely not respond.
I was just curious Willy. Now you have introduced an inconsistancy to your dialogue.
See I became curious in regard to your times--plus you gave your age as being 40. Well, if you were still in high school in 85--then you are NOT 40 yet. So somewhere along the line you are lying out your ass.

Catman - you also missed that he went from HS in 1985 to 'winning local road races' in the late 80's. Doesn't compute does it?
Based on some of his posts in other threads (particularly the Republican vs. Democrat thread), it doesn't seem unlikely at all to me that Willy graduated from High School in 1985 at the ripe old age of 23.
(This assumes Willy really is 40, born in '62)
