Just curious what some of the hardest workouts people have done to train for college xc or track?
common workouts for me are 20 by 400, 8 by mile, 5 by mile, 3x2mile tempo

2 mile tempo, followed by 6x1200, then a hard mile.
Don't do workouts at race effort silly!
Hardest workout I ever did was
2 mile warm up
10k at 6:10 pace
2 min break
13km at 5:25 pace
1 mile cool
4 hour break no food between
1 mile
10km at 6:10
10k at 5:40 died in last 2 miles
1 mile cool down
Basically I left my race out there. I was training for marathon.
30 plus mile day and I have bad memories up to this day
Might sound silly, but the hardest ones for me were the fast 400's with little rest.
4x400 w/ 60 sec rest - 59,57,59,61
4x200 w/ 200 jog - Fast (forget what they were)
OR
6x400 w/90 sec rest - 60,61,61,60,61,61
100% hardest track workouts ever done. However, we did some massive hilly road workouts in college. 10 mile hill tempo or 12 mile hill tempo...these would always a race.

it's the short fast ones that I remember - I did a 2 x (400/ 800) at mile race pace that nearly killed me - I still remember lying on the astroturf hoping my heart would slow down before it broke.
Not on a track, but an elliptical.
15 w/up at ave HR 68% Max,
10 min ave HR at 82%
1 min HR down to 65% Max,
15 min ave HR 87%,
1:30 ave HR down to 68%,
20 min ave HR 93%,
2:15 ave HR 70%,
5:00 ave HR 97%
5:00c/d ave HR 66%
All with arms on stationary handles(more leg work than using moving handles but lower overall HR).
Truly felt like an "honest" 20 x 400 in mid-winter
Legs like rubber the next day, and all this while nursing a 5 weeks old achilles issue. Try this shit in a pool...no way!
Hardest workout was...
2 mile, 3 mile, 1 mile, 800, 800, 800, 1 mile.
3 minutes rest between each one.
3 mile warm up, 3 mile cool down. Separates the men from the boys.
Oh yeah...one more that I did in High School...
1x800 - Went 2:01 - Full Lap Jog
3x400 - Went 63,63,64
For being in High School, that was the best workout I ever did. I was a 4:15 miler.
I probably did more impressive workouts, but, this was the toughest.
1200m indoor time trial (2:56)
5 minutes rest
3x400m w/ 1 min rest (58, 60, 63)
There were 10 minutes afterwards when I couldn't see straight.
I've probably done more difficult workouts while i was in college, but I consider this my hardest because I wasn't in great shape and didn't have a team to push me.
800 2:01
8x400 70-72
600 1:39
2x200 27
5:00 rest after the 800, 200 jog recovery for the rest of the workout.
3x 5k @ HM race pace, 90 secs jog rest (got it from Brad Hudson). Did it untapered. Hardest workout ever.
Hardest workout ever was when I walked from my couch to the fridge.
We used to do 5 repeats up this mountain. I don't know what we were thinking. It would take 40 minutes round trip each time. My friends were nuts.
20x400m 1 min rest on our Cross Course averaged 68 for the whole thing (Senior year of hs)
Or 10 Mile fartlek on the craziest hills youve seen
28 x 200 with 45 second jog @ mile.
For me the most brutal workout is when we do a 200 close to all-out, 15 seconds of rest, and then a 600 at about mile pace.
Do that a few times, and you and lactate will become best buddies. Huffin and puffin.
800m hill repeats can get pretty awful too.

That's a great workout. I've done something similar to that before except 300 meters all-out, 30 seconds, and then 600 meters at 5k pace.
It feels like you are recovering during the 600 which is the strangest feeling I've had in a workout on the track.
It's a Marcus O'Sullivan workout. At least I've heard him advocate for it.
As a 4:27 miler in HS did 3 x mile in 4:43-45 with 1 mile jog between. This was couple weeks from state where I was running the two mile. Goal was hitting 4:45 at halfway...hence the workout. Hit 4:43. Finish 9:32.
Other gems
In hs did 20x400 in 75 on grass
Before I ran 2:32 marathon did a 24 mile run with 4x3 mile in the middle at 5:45-6:00 pace
Of course this was like 10-20 yrs ago
Alan
8 x 100m with 30 sec. rest
