The male pacers where there this time so that can't be an excuse, the course was flat and fast. Maybe she just didn't train as hard as Deena did. Maybe this generation is just soft and they don't work hard? IDK

Deena is faster than Shalane
Shalane uses up all her energy yakkety yakking about how she's gonna FVCK SH-T UP! for months before the race.
Deena and Shalane are in the same generation.
Has anyone wondered about Schumacher's ability to train marathoners to be efficient fat users? Remember what happened with Bairu?

Maybe Deena has slightly more East African genetic material in her DNA?

Agree. This is a metabolic difference- Deena is a better fat burner. It took Ritzenhein several tries to nail one, and even then his marathon performance pales compared to his shorter distance speed (12:56 5K). Same can be said for Mo F..
I said this in the Berlin thread.
Look at their morphologies. Deena looks built for the marathon in every way. When you look at her, you think 'marathon runner.'
I don't think that when I look at Shalane. It does not mean she can't or won't eventually break Deena's record, but I think Shalane's best distance isn't clearly the marathon, whereas with Deena it clearly is.
I think a good comparison is Ryan Hall and Dathan Ritzenhein. The marathon is without a doubt Ryan's best event. Based on his under-distance PRs, Ritz should be running faster over the marathon than he has. The reason he hasn't is because the marathon just isn't his best event.
Everyone has an ideal distance where they will perform better than you would think based on their PRs in other events. For Deena and Ryan, that event is the marathon. For Shalane and Dathan, it doesn't seem to be the marathon (though I think Shalane has more consistently run better relative to her shorter PRs than Dathan has).
Hoe is Deena built for the marathon and Shalane isn't?

Yeah I don't understand this, Shalane is a bit more muscular in the legs, but they are both tiny, Shalane may be an inch taller and a few pounds heavier
Deena just seems to be a better thoner. She is probably more talented then Shalane as well. I remember that jerry was picking deenas coaches brain to train shalane the same way so they train the same way but one is 2 minutes faster on a slower course. Shalane should go back to 10K on the track as she is not competitive in the thon
If you think this generation now racing is soft wait until the kids 5-10 years younger start racing the marathon. Half these kids are just learning to wipe there butts at 20. The millenial generation could be the downfall of this great country. Much to do with the gen x parenting.
I feel like Ritz is built for the marathon
the 'fat burner' stuff is kinda dumb.
Who says Shalane can't just because she hasn't yet? Deena started marathoning in 2001. Two years later she ran 2:21:16, and three years after than she ran 2:19:36. Shalane started in 2010. Four years later she ran 2:21:14. It took her a little longer to get to where she is but she's already a tiny bit faster than Deena was at the same point in time in her marathon career (with a lot more tries along the way than Shalane has made). Give Shalane two more years, the same amount of time it took Deena, and then get back to us.

Where are those butts?

Their, over they're!
surprised no one has suggested drugs yet. Maybe Shalane needs a different training environment or more time spent at 2:19 pace. Maybe it'll come in a few more races.

Umm actually it's not. Did you read Renato's post from a few days ago?

No it's not. Shalane can sustain the necessary pace up to a point, and then she 'bonks'. That's an energy/metabolism issue.
