I am new to the area and already tired of Memorial Park. Just discovered Hershey Park and love it. Wondering if there were any other places to train, preferably in the Western part of the City but anything will do. Thanks

I live in Flint, MI but can tell you the Buffalo Bayou has a bike path on both sides for about 2 1/2 miles extending from the downtown area and Memorial Dr goes and goes and goes. Drive around and scout the area. The neighborhood at the west end of Buffalo Bayou along Allen Pkwy has some enormous homes and is quiet.
if you want some wild trails, I hear the dirt-biking land out toward Katy Mills Mall is pretty good
when you say tired of memorial park, do you just run the little 2.9 mile loop around the park or do you go into the trails. there are a lot of "bike" trails in and around the memorial park area that are a blast to run on.
i have lived and run in houston for sometime now, let me know what kind of distances and what running surfaces you like and i will reply accordingly with what i know
There are some great trails if you travel north on I45 to Huntsville State Park.
I do most of my runs at Memorial because of the shower facility and closeness to work. From Memorial you can do anywhere from 2.9 miles to 21 miles, depending on your creativity. One of my favorites is the River Oaks loop plus Allen Parkway (10m + 5m = 15m). River Oaks is gorgeous to run through and is the standard 10m loop. It takes you through one of Houston's wealthiest neighborhoods. Also, Allan Parkway is the place for hills. It's quite a tough 4.75m loop and you can either run on the asphalt or the grass. For serious long runs, I travel the 60 miles to Huntsville State Park for up to 50 miles of trail running on dirt. Just phenomenal. You won't think you're in Houston. Plus, you can jump in the lake when you're done (very Kenyan-like). Huntsville's got some great trails and hills. Good luck!
the jogging trail at memorial is often crowded with fat people who may get in your way. but if you cross the street to the side of the park with the softball fields and sand vollyball courts there's some great mountain bike trails back behind all that stuff. not nearly as crowded and much more enjoyable. the mountain bikers don't seem to mind too much. hope i could help.
happy running, everyone
