This is a really high quality race.
leader-to-leader 56.89 3rd 400m. 37.77 final 300m!
One of the fastest closes in history.
~99 [F] temperatures as well.

Souleiman is world #2 behind kiplagat right now
Don't forget for many athletes African Championships were important ONLY for qualifying for the intercontinental Cup of September.
I want to remember the rule : Africa can select two athletes per each event, but they can't be of the same Country.
Because in the intercontinental Cup there are not 10000m but 3000m, the first two (of different Countries) in 10000m go to represent the team in 5000m, and the first two in 5000m go to run 3000m.
So, for Asbel was important to be the first Kenyan, since his main goal is to win the intercontinental Cup.
The same for Caleb : for him was not important to defeat Alamirew, but Koech...
Last consideration : these competitions were run with 37 Celsius degrees, that is crazy. This is the first reason because all the middle distances were tactic (look at 5000m women as the worst example).
Renato, why wasn't Silas Kiplagat in the field? Does he qualify by some other route, or is he not running the Continental Cup?
I wouldn't wanna start off quick when it is 98 out either.
Silas didn't compete during the Kenyan Trials, so AK didn't select him for African Championships.
This means he doesn't run the Intercontinental Cup.
In any case, Kenya had the possibility to enter one athlete only per event, so if there is Asbel, no possibility for Silas.
He will try a very fast time, probably, in Rieti.
Renato, any chance that Silas could get close to his time from Monaco in his next race? If so we're in for a treat.
Of course he can get close to it if he has kept training well and gets the same type of race with lots of fast people around him. But for all factors to occur again is unlikely.
anyhoo.
Anyone able to track down a video of this 1500?? and the women's 5000? At the african champs.
This is conjecture on my part but I think the weather suited Souleyman better than Asbel. Reason is that Djibouti is much much hotter than the rift valley where Kiprop and other Kenyans grew up.
Kiprop ran poorly at the Kenyan trials. A DNF I believe.
I guess he just had to line up to get selected for the African Championships.
But he was not selected for the Commonwealth Games.
I think Rudisha ran Commonwealth without participating in the Kenyan Trials.
I don't understand the whole Kenyan process.
Renato, does this mean that Africa will pick Caleb Ndiku and Abrar Osman of Eritrea for their 5000 team?So Alamirew is OUT of the team?

This is true in championship races, but if the race is fast, Souleiman is behind Kiprop.
Souleiman beat Kiprop in Rome and Pre, which were fast races.
Kiprop beat Suleiman in Doha and Monaco which were faster races.
Souleiman has a 3-2 edge over Kiprop so far this year.
Kiplagat has beaten and lost to both of them this year.
Kwemoi is in the mix, too.
There are some good races left.
Very interesting year for the 1500 this year with 4 different men that have won a major race and all of them under 3:30 plus two more under 3:30 for a total of 6 at 3:29 or better.

You da real MVP
Nice
I always thought more than 2 from each could go to the Continental Cup per event, at least for 1500+. Maybe it is different this year.

How much do the Continental Cup pay? When I did my podcast with Nick Willis, he was talking about it and I've heard a lot of people talking about it. Is the money insane??
Commonwealth Champ Ronald Kipkemboi for bronze. Yohan Cronje back in 7th.
Ndiku continues his hot season winning the 5,000.
Today's results:

LetsRun.com addition: A video of the race can be seen below. The top 4 were very close.
Kiprop was too far back with 500m to go and had to work that straight to move up.
In the meantime, Souleiman grabbed the lead going into the turn with 400m to go while Kiprop was out wide on the turn trying to get around people.
Kiprop had more work to do than Souleiman who had a tactically better race.
7 guys went under 3:30 in Monaco, so it's at least 7, not just 6, who went under 3:30 this year. Go 2014 runners!

Caleb Ndiku is appears in the results as Caleb Mwangangi. Is one of those his middle name and the other his last name? Or one his father's name and the other his grandfather's name? Other possibilities?
