Kipketer 1:43.95
Kipketer 1:43.95
Take a look at the list of winners here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_World_Junior_Championships_in_Athletics
Which mark is the best on an absolute scale?
Without thinking about it, we're assuming it's Wilhem Belocian's 12.99 in the 110 hurdles, but wondered what else might contend with that?
If the 12.99 were over 42 inch hurdles that would be the best. Since it wasn't, I too would go with the 1:43.95
And 20.04 would be a contender if it weren't wind aided.
probably 20.04

That 12.99 was almost certainly wind-aided too.
The 1:43.95 was twice into the howling Hayward wind tunnel with no rabbit, leading the whole way. I can't find up to date Hayward records but in 2011 the 800 record was 1:43.68, and Amos went 1:43.63 this year. I vaguely remember a couple of 1:43's at the 2012 OT's, but not a 1:42.
Surely you do not discount the 10,000 Walk WJR????!!!?!
The M800 is discounted until I am convinced of the age of the winner.
That leave 20.04 as the most impressive.
What height are the junior hurdles?

Not if you have your head in the sand.

Thanks. I somehow spent 30 minutes yesterday trying to figure out what height the hurdles were and came up with the wrong anwer.
You are correct. they are lower. I swear I looked it up on tilastapaja and saw it listed as his PB but clearly not as today it's listed under a shorter height.

Hmmm....I didn't know a WJR was set in the walk event. I wish more people would give race-walking attention on this site, as it is a track and field event as much as any other.

12.99 is a litte less impressive who consider Skeets ran close to that time over 30 years ago.

And Ryun ran 1:44.3 as a Junior athlete almost 50 years ago. So what?
If the issue is how good the times are now (and we're just looking at times, and setting aside the hurdle height issue or wind issues) 12.99 is better, relatively speaking. It would have won the 2013 Worlds 110H and been the world leading 110H time for the year (number two in 2014).
1:43.95 is good but not quite that good at the top world 800m level.

That'd be good if the guy was really a junior, or even close to it. My guess is around 25.
