thom hunt runs 4:02.7 for the high school national indoor record in open competition, at i believe sunkist. Matt Centrowitz, the (fat man) who could run, ran 3:43.0, 4:02.7y, 14:17 in high school. people suspected hunt he would go on to break 4:00 outdoors, no dice.
two mile record:
on boards, lindgren, 8:40.0. indoors.
two mile outdoors:
8:36.3, nelson. went on to run for oregon for a semester, two stress fractures, community college, quit. remarkable talent.
jon zishka, 13:56 in high school for the 5k on the track. also holds the sunken meadow 3 mile record for high schoolers on long island in 14:57, where john gregorek holds the 5k record in 15:32.3. Consider Gregorek ran 8:50.7 for two miles, 4:05 for the mile winnning golden west, and 8:56 for the steeple in high school, and was an 8:19 steepler by sophomore year for the boycotted 80 olympic year where he was world ranked.
back in the "day" it wasn't uncommon for guys to go 8:40 in the duece at noon and come back and run 4:08 at 1:30 at an invite after a hot dog in the middle. Putting ritz and webb in a two mile showdown in high school would have heeded nothing more impressive than those doubles. its just the way things go.
