Maybe throw Mark Pilja in there, around 4 or 5. I think he beat out Ed Torres either in states his senior year or at Footlocker Nats in '98. Also was xc, 1600m, and 3200m champ his junior year (sub 9 in the 3200), before Jorge's career took off.
Carey Pinkowski for getting his marathon to be the best in the world. Tops all the other runners by far.
besides that he ran 8:48 for two miles in High School.
Jorge Torres over Tim Broe? Are you daft man!?
Torres has one NCAA title.
Broe has one NCAA title.

Broe has also run 8:14 for the steeple chase and has won the U.S. 4k Championship 2 years in a row.
Tim Broe is the better runner at this point, no doubt about it. There is no argument to be made at THIS time. However, in 4 or 5 years it could be different.
Pinkowski ran more like 8:56 in HS.

But unlike Broe, Torres actually showed up to compete at world XC.
Jim Spivey? Ten years ago would be '92 and Spivey was an olympian in both '92 & '96 wasn't he? He did not make the team in '96, but didn't he complete when someone had to pull out?
I don't know Pinkowski's 3200 (or for him 2-mile) time, but he was a 2 time state XC champion in Indiana in high school.
I've never heard of those runners so they must not be very good. Either that or you just flat out stink as a runner where average and mostly unheard of runners are great in your eyes. The sport of distance running stinks in America and many distance runners are blind to this fact. Their worth in life is diminished by their pursuit of glory which even if obtained renders itself worthless when intertwined with American society.
Take Ah's advice and stay away from sport. Follow some other dream where at least if you miss you will fall among the stars instead of the bottom of the ant hill.
What is your criteria? High school performances or careers? You've gotta give Marius Bakken some love. Looking at past results, he was the only person over the past 10 years to win both the 1600 and 3200. And the 13:09 is better than any of the prior guys you mentioned.
My bad, I meant he's the only person to pull the double other than Don Sage. If you go purely on HS performance, Don Sage was a freaking animal! I noticed in Jorge's senior year, he didn't run track state meet even though Eduardo did. What was the deal?

1. spivey
2. broe
3. torres
4. spangler
5. sage
Is Marius a illinois native ie born there or call that place his home or is he living abroad calling that his home??
Marius Bakken is from Norway. He was an exchange student for one year at York HS, IL.

how funny. best Illinois runner come from Norway. You are stupid. You are in sport that goes nowhere. Perhaps I find many of you when I wipe the dirt off my shoes.
Take Ah's advice and get a real life. Stay away from this sport that lead to nowhere. No one care about track runner. No one pay track runner real money. Only dumb person choose school based on running. Very dumb. Quit sport today and salvage your life.
Mtn Dew,
Nice analysis but you (conveniently) left out one result....didn't Torres finish 12th(or there abouts) at world x-c last year!
Sorry, but in my book (and I'll bet in Broe's too) success on the world stage far overrides any claims to fame and fast times on US soil!!
I heard Dan Anton ran 3:57 or 3:58 last year for the mile last year in Europe. Not bad
Ah says this time stink. No one hear of this runner. No one is to give him money. No sponsor for American distance runner. I write letter to all sponsors to save money and not give to American distance runner. Hopeless.
High School:
1.Don Sage
2.Jorge Torres
3.Tim Keller
4.Marius Bakken (if he counts)
5.Ed Torres
If Bakken doesn't count, then 5 would be either Mark Pilja or Tim Broe
