Track can't even get thru a 3000 without cutting to commercials.

That's cuz soccer's a no-holds-barred fueled adrenaline rush of pure, unadulterated excitement and...oh, wait, I forgot; we're talking about soccer.
Agreed
Not really gonna dis football (soccer)
But I would say I love American Football, but the breaks are really wwhat put me off it, i mean a game last around 3 hours its just dragged out purely for commercial reasons.
I get that the added rests mean the palyers remain fresh and its more powerful and 'on' but its just a shame that it then becomes a whole day thing

aren't you from a cricket-watching country? One day should be nothing to you.
Soccer does this right. All other sports take forever to complete a game due to commercials, timeouts, etc.

That's a pretty good point.
Plenty of time for commercials between races.

American football does not take breaks for commercial reasons.
They fit commercials in around breaks.
Commercials come during change of possessions, timeouts and halftime.
(Maybe the change of possession breaks are extended a little for commercials)
NBA basketball actually has TV timeouts scheduled in.
I don't mind commercial breaks. In fact, I like them. They give me the chance to go to the bathroom or grab some food/drink or tweet something.

Ever been to a game, especially a game that is nationally televised?
TV takes what would be a 30 second change of possession and turns it into a 2 minute break. There is usually a guy wearing what looks to be orange oven mitts on the sidelines. He gives direction to the officials on when they can resume play.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world, so sponsors have adjusted by creating those flashing advertising boards all around the fields. If the 3000m ever became so popular, we'd see the full race.
P.S. Why did you use the 3000m, such an odd choice of distance to base a point?
thanks a lot OJ wrote:

Because that is the shortest event in which there are commercial breaks.
And it it not particularly long.

This is the real reason it's still not the number one sport in america.
The secondary reason is the player salary competition from other leagues makes it difficult to hold down salaries so the owners can make some money. They can't just make an arbitrary salary cap like other american sport since the MLS players association isn't the only group they need to negotiate with.
I was thinking the same thing about the 3k being an odd example.
I think I've seen commercial breaks during a women's 1500, but it may have been a mile, still annoying regardless the distance.
I think it would be cool if we were able to watch an entire marathon uninterrupted. Like maybe do split screen with ads or have the announcers talk about the sponsors. For example, NFL announcers are always promoting other shows on the network. Maybe have brands sponsor each kilometer, so when they say the splits they promote a brand.
I'm jealous of soccer.

that is not entirely true. the commercials after a kickoff (after a score and commercials) are entirely commercial breaks for commercial reasons.
nba and college both have commercial timeouts.
I went to a Champions League game in Milan last fall and the whole experience was pretty refreshing. No overdone pre-game stuff, no music blaring over the loudspeaker, nobody yelling "DEE-FENSE" to get the crowd going, no TV timeouts to kill the flow of play, no annoying halftime show and the game start to finish took less than two hours. I remember that's how ballgames were like when I was a kid. It was kind of nice.
That's right and no one cares about track unless Bolt is running. Running is not a spectator sport. Runners watch runners. The entire world watches soccer. Even Mo watches soccer instead of T&F.
Have you watched soccer lately? They have electronic rotating ads on the sidelines for the whole game. The whole thing is a commercial.

Not instead of.
He watches both

The way to fix that is to give one runner a weapon and start the other runners 30m ahead. That adds danger and makes it real.
