I always see Mizuno, pearl izumi, avia, hokas, brooks, but Nike and Adidas are noticeably absent.
Do they require stores to move a certain amount of volume or have some complicated system?

Basically a lot of specialty running shops will not carry Nike for one of two reasons. A) A Nike account costs an upwards of six figures just for the right sell Nike running equipment. B)Nike requires sale quotas and for shops to carry entire runs of shoes, not select pair at the shop owners discretion. Basically taking on a Nike account is a big risk that many independent shop owners probably don't want to gamble on.
I can only assume Adidas has a similar model in place but I'm not really sure.
100% Not true.
The store I work at carries Pegasus, Stucture, and Vomero and Spikes. Nothing else from Nike.
The store also carries just the Boost from Adidas.
I never thought much about this as I never really bought running shoes from a running store.
I got hooked up a few times from people I knew at a store.
I have a friend who works for Nike who gets me shoes now and then.
There is a Nike outlet store near my house where I will occasionally buy running shoes.
I think I have seen them in Modell's and Sports Authority.
Where do people usually get their Nikes, since you see people wear them in abundance?

From my discussions with one of the local running store owners, #2 above is dead on.
He did not like someone else dictating what he carried in his store. He has done very well for a long time without Nike. He does carry adidias so I guess they are not as controlling as Nike.
