Anybody else disappointed by the CGI?
Godzilla just looks fake... kinda wish they would have spent more time on a more realistic look--especially given the film's big budget.

The one with Matthew Broderick, another big budget one, was one of the worst expensive movies ever made. The black and white one from the 1950s is still the best
You are overruled. The movie scores a 9.3 at IMDB.

If there's one thing that American filmmakers likely learned, it's that the type of people that go to Godzilla movies do NOT want his appearance to be changed.
The horrific reviews for the 1998 incarnation is enough evidence for that.
There are only a few things you need for a successful Godzilla movie:
- Godzilla
- Some other monster
- Godzilla beating up on the other monster
- Godzilla destroying human civilization, with the humans typically being helpless
None of these 4 points were present in the 1998 version, since Godzilla's appearance was changed, he was made into a mutated iguana, there were no other monsters, and humans won.
The last point was actually probably the greatest flaw. Humans NEVER get to win against Godzilla. The 1954 original is the ONLY exception to the rule.
With that in mind, a successful Godzilla movie is VERY different from any other type of successful movie. The CGI can be great, the acting can be fantastic, and the storyline can be remarkable, but if Godzilla isn't near brutally pounding the shit out of something for a significant portion of the movie and killing thousands of people in the process, it's doomed.

Don't give too much credit to the movie just yet. As of now, the only people who have watched it are those who managed to make it to any pre-screenings, and it's very likely that they're all die-hard Godzilla fans to begin with.
The fact that it's got a 9.3 so far really just means that the filmmakers have indeed ensured that Godzilla will be beating the shit out of other large monsters and humans.

Ain't no party like a Godzilla party.
I agree with your assessment of what makes a Godzilla movie work. He is an unstoppable force. We are ants that can only safely observe from a distance and must start re-building our ant hill once he's knocked it down again knowing full well that won't be the last time. Our only means of dealing with the destruction is to simply get out of the way if you can.
I actually like the CGI and the way he looks compared to the movies I watched as a kid. The rubber suit doesn't work for me as an adult. I think it's more believable now. I don't want to think of him as a friend to children or a protector of humanity. Yes, he may battle cosmic monsters or those that were created to destroy him but only for his own survival, not ours.
I love the critics. He doesn't look real. Of course not you knob job... it's science FICTION!!!! They often simply lack imagination and the ability to suspend belief no matter how realistic or improbable. Try reading more if movies don't do it for you. Writing something that the general public will accept and taking the time to invest in making a movie hoping to break even is probably more scary than anything you could dream up.
History shows again and again how nature points out the folly of men....

What if they shoot a humongous nuclear missile into his mouth?
Forget Godzilla, Gamera is where it's at.

I thought I remembered King Kong beating the crap out of Godzilla.
Also, wasn't there a "new monster v old monster" movie where the new monster (which looked like a flying turtle and breathed super-cooled air) beat up on Godzilla?

If you don't want to find out it's just science fiction then why do you come to a message board? Lock yourself in your basement if you don't want to know Godzilla isn't real!

You heard it here first:
Coming to Broadway 2015:
"Godzilla...The Musical"
Godjira (1954), released to theaters in 1956 was the undisputed best "Godzilla" movie. It was the original with some of the best Japanese actors ever. Every other movie afterwards was based on this movie.
