In March, I posted about how we want to improve the running shoe discovery/buying process and put your in a better pair of running shoes by surveying you on your current shoe. Most people find shoes in a pretty haphazard way and we want to improve that process. The shoe that is best for me, a washed up skinny 6'1" 155 lb runner, is likely not the best shoe for a collegiate runner who pronates, or the best one for a 5'8 155lb runner.

We want to survey you on your current shoe, get some demographic data (age, height, weight, sex,) and then get running demographics (what pace you run, what surface, what's your foot type, recent injuries, etc) and try and link shoe satisfaction to the various demographic data. We also want to poll you on your previous shoe and how well you liked that shoe.
The premise is try and link runner profiles to the best running shoe for them. Also, then over time, when the next version of a shoe come out, we can update the data and you can see if people like you were most satisfied in upgrading to the new version of the shoe or switching to a different shoe.
I've thought a little bit more about the questions we want to ask and am putting some of them below for feedback. The way I envision this, is we will give people the opportunity to bail out of the survey along the way, but want to get as much info as possible. Also, we will let people save the info if they want to so they can have a shoe profile on LetsRun and then when they get a new pair of shoes update the data so we can more quickly find out what's going on with the new version of shoes.
Here's the data we're thinking of getting with some of my comments under each point. Feel free to post in this thread or email me @
your thoughts.
1) Basics- shoe and basic demo data.
Age, sex, height, weight, shoe size, width, years you've run and the current shoe you are training in and satisfaction on a 1-10 scale.
2) More detailed running data
Avg mileage you run
Primary surface you run on
Do you use orthotics?
What's you primary event you are training for
Avg pace you run
(Should we ask something about goal pace or various paces you run?)
3) More detailed foot data
Arch type
Footstrike type (forefoot, midfoot, etc)
Level of pronation or is this captured with arch type?
4) Do you rotate shoes?
5) Injury data
When was your last injury and what type was it?
*plantar *achilles *knee *calf *toe
Any more detailed injury history questions we can ask here?
6) What was your previous shoe you ran in?
Rate it on a scale of 1-10 to see if you liked it better than their current shoe. We think there will be a lot to be learned by linking people together who liked similar shoes in the past and currently.
7) Do we need to ask about racing shoes?
Those are my thoughts. Thanks in advance.
