I found it oddly humorous that the starting pistol misfired at the gun lap. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/03/17/sports/after-the-mile-the-tim-danielson-story.html

Sad state of affairs for Danielson.
Curious if anybody knows a couple things:
1) Why did they run in lanes for so far?
2) Why did they start in lanes at all?
3) Why was this particular state meet mile so well filmed?

1 and 2: Those were the CA HS rules at that time. There were specific rules on how each event was to be run just as there are now.
3: Primarily because of Danielson, but it was also considered a loaded year/class that had attracted a lot of attention with a big fan base.
anybody know what some of these guys are doing now?
When is his murder trial ever going to start?

Never. He'll be released soon. Officials will soon realize that once a man has run a mile under four minutes, he should be allowed to do whatever he likes without fear of punishment.
Had form a lot like Alan Webb... cool video.
Bob Scurich is from my high school. He is still my high school's mile/1600m record holder running a 4:13.4 mile as a junior in 1965. My high school coach was Scruich's teammate. My coach told me that in his opinion Scurich had sub 4:10 talent (Scurich also ran 1:53.8 for 880y) but he got kind of sidetracked as a senior and only ran 4:17 as a senior. Scurich went on to UCLA and played football and rugby and never ran in college. My coach last saw Scurich at their 10 year reunion in 1976.
It was a shame that Bob Scurich didn't take his running seriously enough to pull him out of the mess that he was soon to experience in life. Coach Tom Leikam didn't like to talk about Scurich's rough side of life, but he came from a large, influential Watsonville family and a lot of people like to concern themselves with and talk about tawdry things like drugs, pimping, and repeated thefts. I won't go into detail, but it is a shame.
4:13 talent as a HS jr. in 1965 is phenomenal potential, but that was the end of the line for Bob. :(
Damn, that was impressive. 4:07 on a cinder track, with no carbon plated shoes. And a dominant wire to wire win.
