Unfortunately, our ad partner has insisted they run with sound. We are trying to work on a solution with them but have come up with an easy solution.
If you hit "mute" on the auto-player, it will be muted forever more as it remembers you thanks to a cookie. So just hit mute, then the videos play but you aren't bothered. If you see a great video or ad you want to watch it with sound, just hit un-mute. ESPN uses similar technology where it remembers your preferences.
Sorry for the inconvenience. We believe that's a fair compromise. We were contemplating having a splash page to tell people about the mute option.
We've long insisted that no sound be the default and were surprised by this edict. But we can't run the sight without ads. To give away content for free with no ads would be the definition of stupidity.
Ummm.... ever heard of ad block?
I have adblock on my personal laptop but I also have a company network laptop and my only browser choice is IE. These ads are so intrusive that sometimes the entire thread won't even load. Some ads on the right border, some within the thread. Reminds me of the freaking 90's.
Then get a new ad provider.
Seriously, your inability to fix this issue is costing you money. I haven't been using ad block on LRC because I want to support you guys. I recognize the value of the work you do and I want you to get paid for it.
But that means you have to be reasonable with your ads. If your provider won't allow that, it's time to get a new provider.
This has got to stop.
We have bee reassured countless times by LR corporate that auto play ads do not exist on this site. End of story, they do no use them.

Maybe you stop looking at this site on your work computer

Actually, try downloading "Firefox portable". It doesn't need Windows admin rights to install. Then you can install adblockplus. Of course this won't work if your employer blocks any unknown .exe from running, but most don't.
can't believe you are promoting steriod inhalers (ads)????
I got an ad on here for a gay cruise once
I understand the need to make money. Too bad you can't get a different ad provider though
Minor in the grand scheme of things but the two most annoying things are
1)Can't look at LRC on my phone, as the auto-play videos devour the bandwidth
2)Fairly minor, but it makes it not possible to open up a bunch of tabs at once without lagging like mad depending on the PC I'm using
adblock works

You understand that the ads shown are based on past searches you've done, right?
