So, here’s the deal. Age 34, PR’s of 17:30 5K and a 4:59 mile.
Both PR’s were last fall. I balance a full time job and I’m married and we are going to try to have a child this year. This might be my final chance to obtain my goal and train my butt off before I switch my priorities.
My wife is also runner and she understands the commitment and she trains as well, so I’m in the clear for now. She has been supportive of everything and WANTS to me go for this, before our child is born. Needless to say, the pressure is ON!
I raced 8 5K’s last year and I tried with everything I had to break 17 and I could not do it. I ran one so hard I threw up minutes after the finish.
I tried running 70 miles a week last summer and I didn’t see much improvement. This was a lot of miles at 7:30 pace, and long runs up to 12-15 miles.
Over the winter, I stuck with 70 miles per week and added in even more intensity. Still no improvement. Tried following Daniel’s Running Formula, specifically the 1500-3K plan with 17 mile long runs, and it just left me tired, even with a proper self-imposed taper.
So here are some workout stats:
- I can routinely knock out 29 to 32’s on a 12x200 (200m jog recovery) workout.
- 4 mile tempos are 6:05 pace.
- 3x1600 (with 90 second standing recovery) - (5:23, 5:38, 5:29)
- 11x400 (with 60 second standing recovery) all at 1:13’s
So, obviously I don’t know what to do. My window is closing on me to run that 16:59. I have considered the extremes, upping to 80mpw or moving down to 45 mpw and doing a ton of tempos, hills, and intervals and wedging slow recovery days between workouts.
Any advice? Thanks for reading.
