Many on the left are responding to this by doing exactly what they typically accuse Republicans of doing: trivializing the economic realities that are causing would-be job seekers to give up in despair (the fact of the horrifically bleak job market) and accusing them of laziness.
It's Bush's fault.
From the same article: In addition to discouraged workers, this group also includes people who are retired, enrolled in high school or college, and staying at home to take care of young children or elderly relatives.
A follow up comment from someone: "91 Million SOUNDS like a huge number until you actually look at what is IN the number....just over 47 Million of the 91 are retired folks, just over 22 million are students. That means just about 70 million or about 3/4 of the number are retired or students. Now drop in those staying home to take care of family members, stay at home parents...the ACTUAL number not in the work force is VERY low."

None of those categories preclude the likelihood that their members would rather be working.
-Many retired people need money and would like to work, but don't due to the abysmal job prospects for people over 50 in a bleak economy. These people have been effectively forced into retirement.
-Many students, including both HS and college, both need and want work, but cannot get it because there simply aren't enough jobs in many places.
-Many parents who "stay-at-home" only do so because there is no work for them.

You mean in 1978, 37% of adults were not working nor looking for a job???? If that's true then all is not lost because there were some really great times between then and now. And back then there was no Obama doing bad things to America. Who caused those dim times???

Unlike the guy that you quoted, you are just saying things. No numbers, no references or stats to back up your claims. The other guy provided actual real numbers.
Not nearly as many selling dope on the corner as a full time profession in 1978.
It was mostly just part-time spending money back then.

Yes because before Obama came into office no one ever retired, there were no students and nobody ever cared for a family member. Great logic. Thanks for pointing that out.

Yes he got those so called "actual real numbers" from, as he put it, a "someone". Go back and read the quote.
Gee I could throw out any numbers I wanted and referred to the source as a "someone" too.

Yes, the "someone" was Dylan. Well if Dylan said so then it must be true.

He said "many" three times. I mean, how much more quantitative do you need?
Of course he could have just used the real numbers for the different unemployment rates:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unemployment_rate#MeasurementOf course they wouldn't actually add up to 37%. Oops.
Damn You Obama!! Worst President ever!!

I don't need to go back and read anything. The point wasn't that the numbers were verifiable or not. It's that he at least made an attempt to have a reasonable and quantifiable argument. Saying and relying on "many" is just useless.
- Ban higher education.
- Reduce the minimum working age to 12.
- Increase the retirement age to 85 and euthanize anyone older.
- Mandatory death sentence for anyone who's been convicted of a felony.
- Release everyone from mental institutions.
- Repatriate all unemployed adults whose family immigrated to the USA since 1885.
- Introduce of work camps for the remainder of the unemployed.
Done!

Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed. Blood will be shed. The police will survive as they learn to serve true justice. This great city, it will endure. Gotham will survive.
You forgot to include middle school and elementary school kids.
And pre-schoolers and babies.
They are Americans who aren't working.
So the REAL number is higher than 91 million Americans not working.
